poor heat&defrost
been driving my 2000 f-150 5.4l for a week now and it takes it a long time to blow any heat at all, i know its cold here right now, bot my old 95 f-150 6-cyl.got heat 10 times faster, any clues to why my new one doesnt want to build heat?

I think one symptom of the thermostat being stuck open would be the truck not reaching normal operating temperature.
Does the valve allowing water to enter the heater core open fully?
Any kinked heater hoses?

Michael54, I have a '99 4.2l and it exhibits similar symptoms as yours. This week it has been between 0 and 10 degrees F in these parts and it takes at least 20 minutes before I get decent heat blowing out of the vents. My feet are always cold and I think the problem is a lousy duct design on the drivers's side. It seems to direct heat to my calfs (is that how you spell it?) and not my feet. The passenger side seems fine. My wife's Taurus has a better heating system after it was recalled! My local dealer told me that there is nothing functionally wrong with the heating/cooling system but that it is a common gripe among F150 owners. The A/C works fantastic in the summer time, far better than the Taurus.
If your thermostat was stuck open, given the weather we experienced this last week or so in the northeast, you engine would NEVER reach operating temperature. Take care.

I have a 2000 f150 5.4 and it too seems to get the heat slowly. I've been plugging in my block heater(its been below zero), and I get heat by the end of my 1/4 mile3 driveway.

You Guys do realize that the Engine has to heat up before you get heat in the cab Right?
It's not a big deal to me because I live in southern Louisiana. If I were You I'd go out 15 mins before I was gonna leave and Start the truck with the heater on full blast. I tell you what though, The more important feature of the System Works Great. The A/C is Cold. Even when Its like 100 outside its nice and cool inside within mins.

I'm not sure if the F150 uses a similar system from what my T100 had but usually when you have the heat on full right after you start the truck it will run coolant throught the heater core thus slowing the heating process of the entire system, kind of like another radiator. I usually let my truck warm up for 5-10 min. in the winter before I get in and go to work and not run the heating system at all during that time. It to me seems to warm up faster. Try that and see if you get the same results.

My 2000 also seems to take a while to start blowing heat. I thought it was the Mobil-1 oil I out in it a while back (working too good)...but now I see other people have similar experiences.
My 98 F-150 seemed to kick out heat much quicker when it was cold.

It takes my truck about 5 minutes to heat up, with the mode switch off. Also don't run your fan on high speed, it cools your heater core down much like you fan behind the radiator.

I recall reading an article a few years back that stated the mod motors and the v6 used a reverse flow water pump that would provide better cooling for the heads. I believe the flow goes to the heads first, then to the block. I've had several vehicles with the mod. motor and all were slow to warm up the interior. My .02
