I be damned it worked

Used 5w-30 and a Motorcraft filter and no more knoking when I do a cold start.

I'll guess that he was running an oil filter without the anti-drain back valve.. That will cause cold start knock every time..

Was using 10w-30 and a Fram.

My first oil change, I used both that you mentioned. Mine didn't knock when cold, but it wasn't really cold either and mine is in a garage too.

Switched from the Fram pretty soon after because of what was said about the anti drain back valve of the Frams, but kept the 10w30, but on next oil change, went to the 5w30 because that's what is spec'd for it.

HI!... I've been running VALVOLINE 10-W-30 and FRAM "DOUBLE GUARD" filter since day one. I've never had a problem or a cold start up noise.

I'm with neal. I went with synthetic 10-w30 last time though. That reminds me, I think it may be getting time to change it again.
