I've got an 04 f150 with the 5.4 3v. Long story short. Was driving down the road, engine started knocking almost dying and lost oil pressure. Pulled over sat a few and everything was fine and made it home. I have been researching a lot on here and other places and seems that bad VVT solenoids will cause this. They are leaking oil and looks like that have actually blew oil out of them because it's all over my hood and all down the valve cover. Is it this simple or is there something else I'm missing?

 

How many miles on the engine? You may need a complete timing job and oil pump.
