Question Engine rebuild - what to rebuild??

Got a 95, 4.9 liter, manual (what a great engine!!) with 116,000 mostly highway miles. Does not blow oil, though pressure seems to be down to 'O' from 'M' on the on the pressure gage (i.e., the word "Normal" on the gage). Decided its time to rebuild rather than buy a new one (live in ME - taxes suck for a new rig). Oil changed every 3-6K. Questions: other than a compression test, what should typically be done to a 4.9 with this amount of miles on it? Assuming "good compression", what items should be addressed? Valves? Pistons? What if a cylinder or two have marginal compression? By the way, what is a "good" compression number? Thanks!

Sounds like your engine is just fine. The electric gauges are not the most precise. As far as compression goes, it's something like 120 psi on each cylinder with the lowest compression cylinder not less than 80% of the highest compression cylinder. A good mechanic can also do a leak down test to check the integrity of your valves. It really sounds like your engine is just fine, no leaks, no consumption, reliability is still there.

If your concerned about oil pressure tap a guage into an oil plug somewhere on the engine and get a true reading at idle and at about 2000 rpm. Maybe all you need is a new oil pump or a stiffer spring in the one you have. Keep on driving until it dies; then rebuild.
Save that money for tires with all those miles

Like everyone else is saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" I have an '88 ranger 2.9 with 169,000 miles and travel up a steep mountain to work everyday, when brand new the truck would only go 35mph in 4th gear up the steepest part and now after all those miles it still goes 35.
Have you ever taken anything apart and later wished you never fooled with it, this may fall into that category
Sometimes something as simple as an oil change will raise your oil pressure, if your oil is getting old
