5.4 cracked valve cover and p0012

2004 f150 5.4 fx 160k miles
I’ve replaced all the ignition coils and some of the harnesses and had a slight “stumble” at around the 1200 rpm range. It threw vvt codes about a year ago and I replaced the solenoids and no codes since. Slight stumble at lower rpm’s persisted but no codes or knocking/engine noise. I was waiting for it to throw another ignition coil code..
This morning when I left for work when I was backing up I heard a slight crunch like running over a can or bottle. Nothing was in the drive and I didn’t think much about it.
Left work and thought I smelled oil. Check engine light comes on. I stop and see oil running done pass side by the valve cover. Oil level is low but ok, engine not overheating, etc.
Drive slowly the rest of the way home. It has some hesitation going up hills but still feels ok. No bucking or stalling and only a slight rattle from pass side. Pull the battery out and find a crack in the pass side valve cover. Think that is the ‘crunch” I heard this morning. Absolutely no oil leaking before then. Scanner only has one code p0012.
I am waiting for it to cool off before trying to pull the valve cover off. I think by the location and engine code that something has gone terribly wrong on that pass side phaser. Just looking at what my next course of action should be.

You may need a timing set - chains, tensioners, guides, phasers.

I’m thinking it’s a lot worse than I first thought. Didn’t get the valve cover off but the 1 yr old plugs look trashed.

At least you got them out without breaking them.
