DON C

Thats EXACTLY the same thing I did!!!
Good minds think alike!

I couldn't believe the K&N had a flat nose to it! The stock filters come domed! Makes sense to stick with the stock design, they obviously make it that way for a reason. They don't just add extra plastic (which costs$$) for looks!

Nice job!

Lets not forget a few of things about the RAM AIR!

1) Doesn't work until you get above 60 MPH.

2) Off Roading could be hazardous to your trucks health.

3) The Z28 SS Ram Air is not that much quicker than the stock Z28.

4) Wont change your 0-60 times vs. stock.

5) with the Weight of the trucks you'll NEVER FEEL IT!

6) Probably a total waste-O-time and money!

You will only feel better throttle response on the highway!

I would personally stay with the stock setup with a K&N.

Spend the money on other mods that make a difference! Open that damn exhaust up!!!

These are NOT Muscle cars!!!!!!! You can only do so much! Besides the aftermarket guys don't make that much stuff!

1 word - SUPERCHARGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats the best bang for the buck! You can spend YEARS and THOUSANDS and barely get 40 HP OR you could have power RIGHT NOW at the same cost or less (less total time involved).....

Thumbs up

For those who haven't bought thier trucks yet or plan on trading, paying the extra few hundred for the 5.4L is the best bang for the $$$.
AND you can finance the cost over 5 years which works out to about $20.00 a month.
Think how many months you have owned your truck and how much you have spent on perfomance mods.
Divide it out and I'll bet it's more than $20.00 a month.
For me I'll wait till the jury comes back in before I lay out the $$$ for performance mods.
The only thing everyone agrees on that really works is superchip, but my gas bill is already too expensive with regular gas much less premium.

trumpet tube

Knowing a little bit about HVAC, I will safely say that the way the stock tube from the fenderwell goes into the air box mod allow for better aif flow than replacing with pvc pipe, dryer duct etc, The reason is the tube is a rigid surface that starts out small and then opens up into air filter box,by design the airflow travels @ a high velocity due to the turbelance that's created in the way this tube is shaped.

There are plenty of people on this thread that have found out there is little to no gain for the expense of the aftermarket air intake systems.
I have made the replacement to the intake neck with alum dryer hose.
It fits over the stock filter housing and covered with duct tape it can be square formed to the fender opening.
Paint it flat black and it look just like it came from the factory that way.
There is little to no extra noise.
The truck runs very well for a 4.6 Screw with no other mods. I can't honestly say there a performance gain but it was a restriction by it's size.
THERE IS NO MAGIC POWER FROM THIS KIND OF CHANGE anytime but possibly wide ope throttle where you seldom run.
Take some time to count how many aftermarket air intakes there are and the price range.
There there because there is a fool born every minute to buy them.

I tried the "home made" version of the intake that started this thread origonally. It sucked, I drove to yellowsotne the very weekend I installed this mod, I lost 2mpg on 2 different fillups, I concluded the engine was drawing to much hot air, luckily I thought this would be a problem so I brought allong my stock air box & next fillup after putting the stock back on I was back up 2mpg on my mileage. I have thought about doing the 3" pvc to the fender wall but dont know if this is even worth the time, any thoughts on that?

If you gain any horsepower or at least thing you gained horsepower, its all psychological. Just like other things out there.

I did a Temp, Mod...to see

Ok, I did a "poor-mans" version of the air box mod. To see if anything changed. There is much better responce. Yes, you do see a panty hose on the filter, hee hee for bugs, and large stuff. And "yes sir" that is infact a pie Pan that I cut .... well I am going to look at the Junk yards for a filter cover I can cut, I don't want to cut mine...just incase, the heat from summer...does something I don't like I can just pop mine back on...
