A very basic question:
How is CID measured?

Jimb:
The displacement is the volume "swept" or displaced by the pistons. You could theoretically measure it by moving a piston to very bottom of its travel, fill the cylinder with a liquid (though the spark plug hole), move the piston to the top of it's travel and measure the volume of liquid displaced by the piston's movement (the amount spit out the spark plug hole). Multiply this number by the number of cylinders and you have the displacement of the engine. It can be calculated if you know the bore (diameter of the cylinder) and stroke (the vertical distance the piston moves) of the engine.

Engine displacement used to be measured in cubic inches (ci), but these days it's measured in liters (L).

These dissertations on displacement are very enlightening.

The volume of the combustion chambers.

An engine is basically an air pump. Displacement referrs to how much air can be moved though the engine in one revolution.
