WTK: The correct oil filter

What is the proper oil filter for 5.4L ? I have heared that most do not hace a check valve? What Motorcraft filter # should I use and what do I look for on the filter body.

Thanks Ron

Motorcraft FL820-s

I still think this is the best for these motors.

I changed the oil last week in my new truck, apprx 1500 mi, and I am decided to use the Motorcraft brand since it has the correct silicon valve. It was about $ 3.00 at O'Reilly's.

Talking Oil filters

I drove a 98 F-150 to 204,000 miles using nothing but Mobil 1 Tri-synthetic and Mobil 1 or K&N Oil Filters. Traded it in last week for a 2001.

Purolator Pure-One PL24651. The Motorcraft filter is essentially a Purolator Filter and is also a very good filter and cheap too!

Thanks for the info

My truck is a 2000 with a 5.4 and sounds like a rods banging around when I first crank it. I have been running 10w-30 and a Fram filter. So I am going to try 5w-30 and the ford filter to see if that helps. If not guess I battel Ford for a new motor.

Engine knock -> Fram

Ron-Ron
I bet the other filter will help. From everything I've read Fram is the worst to buy. Take a look at this oil filter study (I get this link gets posted somewhere once a week! )

It's the same as minimopar's but for some reason his link isn't working so use this one:

I use the Ford filter on my v6. So good so far. Plus if you ever have to battle with the dealer in regards to a problem.... it will probably help

What engine? Just curious.

I agree with gopher!

I also run the Purolator Pure-one. I read in one of the oil studies posted somewhere where it is a very good filter. I have no true facts to prove to me that the K&N filter is any better. So for the price I get em (20% off) they do just fine.

Sorry it took so long to get back. Moving (putting the truck to use). It was the 4.6L.

What did you get for your high milage trade if you don't mind.

I am in the process of finding new 2002 and will be trading 98 F-150 XLT Ext. Cab 4.6 with 120,000 miles. One dealer offered me 7,000 for my mint trade.
