2008 5.4l 3v triton engine

So I have an issue. I had my low oil pressure indicator come up over the weekend and it immediately started running really rough. When the indicator came on I checked my oil level and it was damn near empty but had checked it 3ish weeks before that and it was fine, so I topped it up with oil and it started up and drove fine for a bit but I ended up losing oil pressure again, lost power, and it died when I came to a stop. It’s not so much knocking but a really loud tick, and it’s making an awful grinding sound aswell. Any insight as to the issue would be appreciated! Thanks

I think your engine has seen better days. This does not sound like a simple or inexpensive repair.

Read this thread, this may be what's starting to happen:

That could definitely be the issue. I’m just hoping I haven’t done too much damage. The engine didn’t lock up it just stalled out from the low oil pressure

You are done.

I would look for a junk yard motor, unless you are planning to keep the truck for a really long time, then I'd go for a warrantied reman.

Junkyard 5.4 3 valves are a crapshoot.

Using that much oil in 3 weeks is a bad sign. Running it with low oil pressure, plus with those noises, is also a bad sign.

So a mechanic cave and took a look at it. And we started it up without an issue. No grinding just the tick, so it’s not locked up thank god. I’m gettin a code about my camshaft timing, but since I have the lockout kit he seems to think it’s not doin it job. Until someone tears into it I won’t know exactly what’s goin on in there. Basically the truck going into limp mode saved my *** in a way. It’s not really good news but it’s better than hearing your motors completely cooked. He’s got a guy who can grab me an engine with low km for fairly cheap if that’s the cheaper route to go.

I bet the ticking is the cam followers, as explained in the video.

Yea I brought that up with him and he did say that one is probably really worn out, I guess now it all depends on what I hear back from them. I Appreciate the help!
