Post WHY are Navigators so much faster than Expiditions???

The power to wieght ratios are almost the same.

EXP: 260 HP 350 ft lbs torque and about 5500 lbs Thats 1 HP will push 21.15 lbs. (21:1)

Nav: 300 HP 355 ft lbs and about 5700 lbs
Thats 1 HP will push 19 lbs (19:1)

Theres no way a Navigator will pull on an Expidition from 0-60 by 1.5 to 2 seconds...
It does not make sense....So what's the secret??

This was comparing:

Expidition Eddie Bauer 4x4
Navigator 4x4

Are the gear ratios the same? Were both tested on the same track at the same time? Same driver?

If the Nav has a 3.73 and the Expy has a 3.55, that could be part of the difference. Weather can make a big difference if different test days. Also, peak HP is only one point on the rpm scale. Maybe the Nav tested has a bigger power increase in the mid range than at the peak.

Over the years, Ford has been pretty unreliable with its HP claims. Most figure the Lightning is under-valued at 330 net hp, while the recent Cobra's are overstated. In the old days, the 290 gross hp Boss 302 was much stronger than a stock 271 gross hp 289 hipo.

Also, two 'identical' vehicles from the factory frequently run differently from one another, so if they had a 'good' Nav and dog Expy, that could be most of it.

Various sites (including the Ranger site) have an HP calculator. If you have the ET, weight and trap speed, you can make and HP estimate.

I saw a CarDriver show while back and I thought they said the Nav was 600 lbs heavier than the Expy?

Cool

Doesn't the navigator have the 4 valve heads?
Does the expy have the 4 valve heads?
The difference in heads would have a difference in power curve, right?

Not sure about the rear ratios. I have 3.73's which makes a very big difference off the line with little or no change in mileage. The 3.73's are mainly for towing/pulling power.

The 4 valves would help the engine rev quicker and help torque. But not that much in this instance.

The Nav's can weigh up to 600 lbs. more....

2 seconds though????
One guy posted a 0-60 of 7.9 in his Nav and 10 in his Expy...

Maybe he had a very slow Exp with bad gears and a 4.6 ??

Yes - the Nav engine has 4 valves / cylinder
and the Espy has a regular 5.4l truck engine.
