2011 to 1998 4.6 swap

Good Evening,

New to the forum, and need some advise. I have purchased a 98 f150 with a 4.6 that has a cracked block. I know it has been covered in previous post but I wanted to see if there is any updated info. The bad engine is a 4.6 romeo. I have found a 2011 4.6 out of a econoline van with 50000 miles on it. Woulld this engine work as a replacement for mine? If I understood from the other post, I would need to change the intake and use my coil packs instead of the coil overs. What else would need to be changed? I would appreciate any advise you could gove me.

You will have to either use the van intake and exhaust manifolds, or get a set of them off a 01-03 F-150 4.6 with PI heads. The 2011 van engine has PI heads, and non-PI manifolds don't work. You may have some sensor and electronic issues. You will have to use the truck throttle body as the 2011 is an electronic throttle.

Thanks for the reply. Will I need a different tune or will the stock 98 work? What about the coil packs? Will the 98’s work?

The tune and coil packs should be fine.

Your 98 has a coolant temp sensor and temp sender threaded into the coolant crossover on the front of the intake manifold, 99+ do not have these sensors.

You will need to tap them into the cooling system on the new engine or else the PCM won't be able to monitor temp and your temp gauge won't work.

Sorry for the late reply! Dang yard work!! I do appreciate all the info. I think I may go ahead and try get the engine. Any advise on checking out a used engine that has already been pulled. He is a private seller and says that it was running when he pulled it. I know to check the oil and inside the filler cap. Makes me a little nervous because he only wants 650 for the engine and trans. Not sure if the trans will work in the 98 but the one in the truck now is supposed to be good.

The van trans will NOT work in your truck. Too many electrical differences.

I don't like buying used engines without hearing them run first but sometimes its worth the gamble.

One thing you can do is turn the crank and make sure the rotating assembly moves as it should. Also if the engine still has the oil filter attached, pull it off and cut it open.

Yep. Same here. You don't know if you are getting a mix of cast iron and aluminum lawn ornament.
