Ticking Noise

I have a 09 F150 4door 5.4 pickup. It has 122k miles on it. It has started ticking, but only at startup and if I put it in reverse sometimes. I thought it was the pistons but they were not the issue. I was told it could be the cam phazer and timing needed to be reset. Any suggestions?
