My '04 FX4 with 220k miles is starting to leak oil by the rear seal and at the pan. Would love a new rig but can't afford $46k for a new one. At some point I'll just do a swap for a new engine; my question is does Ford offer any other designs as crate motors or simply the 5.4 3v? If it's the latter, are they still making that engine or would it be a re-manufactured old core?

 

Putting anything but a 5.4 3 valve in would not be an easy swap. No such thing as a "new" aftermarket 5.4 engine, they will all be remans.

If you find the right shop, they will be happy to rebuild it or replace it with a reman if you are happy with the truck and the rest of it is in good condition.
