I have tracked mileage from day one.
1996/1997 17.386 mpg
1998 17.597 mpg
1999 18.329 mpg
Overall 31,600 miles average mpg 17.771
at an average cost of $1.212 or 6.8 cents per mile. I have spend over $2159 on gas.
I use mostly 92 octane from Chevron. Your profiles are good. I fall into numbe two.

2500-3500 rpm normal?
I'm babying mine more than I thought.
If I hit 3500rpm I'm movin' pretty strong.
I can normally keep up with traffic without exceeding 2000rpm.
If I go over 3000 the wife accuses me of racing.

54,

I would consider investing in a passenger side ejection seat. Works for me!

Cool

54,

You probably dont need to go much over 2500 to move out with the truck you have. (2wd, 5.4, shortbed). I find shifting at 2000-2500 is pretty much lame in my truck, although, if you wind it up another 1000 rpm, it goes much better. I think most 4.6 owners would agree.

Cool

I find the stated mileages to be outstanding, and would like to know the method of testing each of you uses.

For example, I kept a log of every tenth of a gallon that I put in my '97 5.4l SC w/3.55 for the first 20+K miles -- and it worked out near 14.8 MPG overall.

When I check mileage, I fill to overflowing, run the truck, and fill to overflowing -- and find absolutely no accuracy with the "fill to first click" or "fill to second click", etc. method.

The most I ever saw was near 17 MPG on a "fill, run on E-Way, and refill"; and the worst was around 11 or 12 MPG. The records went with the truck, so I can't be more specific -- and my new Y2K seems to be running about the same as for the first few K miles on my last one -- even though the Y2K is a 4x4 with 3.73 instead of 3.55.

I'd really like to hear from someone who has added up 10K or more of fuel tickets and come up with the overall mileage.

Happy Calc'n,

Jim

my mileage seems to be in line with jgorka. The worst i ever got was 9 mpg (pulling a trailer w/6000 lb car on it) from OK city to SA TX. Best is almost 18mpg about 60-65 mph between SA and Killeen TX (130 miles).

Question

Hey Boardman,
I see you are getting much better mileage with the same truck as me (except I have an automatic). Which of the mods seem to have made the biggest difference? I assume you are running premium unleaded with that Superchip? Thanks in advance.

Bearintex,
I would say the Superchip, it gave me about 1.2 mpg avg. on 5 tanks of gas. I do use only premium since the chip, but now that we have the oxygenated fuels, I am getting about 15.9 - 16.3 mpg. Highest city mileage was 17.6, so it does not vary all that much. I see that most folks here have basically the same mods I do, but most don't seem to get the mileage I do (some get better, but not many). I can't explain it, but I ain't complainin'

Unhappy

You people should feel lucky to be getting such good milage!
I have been getting 12.5mpg on average. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I drive it, it's always the same. I had a 99 Silverado with 4.10 gears and averaged between 17mpg and as much as 20mpg on the highway, but that was the ONLY good thing about the truck!

I have mine in an Excel spreadsheet and I always fill up when I buy gas (I top it off like people say do not do).
Most gas tickets I get are spread to the hundredths.

Just to put in my 2 cents worth... I just filled up my truck and the last three tanks averaged 14.32 MPG and I am a very conscientious driver. If your looking for a high MPG truck... better look elsewhere. I have tried driving the truck harder but my MPG really doesn't vary that much. Most of my mileage is 40-45 MPH with a few stop and goes. Wish I could report that I get 20 MPG but that big 5.4 isn't very forgiving Love the F-150 though... I don't care what my GM friends say...

Cool

I have consistantly gotten almost exactly what you calcutated. Babyin" 17mpg, which is my normal, normal" 15.8, which is me in a hurry. Hardly ever run it hard more than once or twice on a tank.

I think those of us in California tend to get even lower mileage, thanks to our MTBE laden gasoline (lower energy content) and CA emissions programming in the computer. Also, stop and go driving like in 'freeway' traffic jams just kills your mileage in these heavy trucks. I've had a best of about 18.2 mpg (all highway, 75+ mph) to a worst of about 14.5 (lots of city) and I've got a V-6!

I have ~1500 miles now and get between 13.2 and 14.3 MPG, mostly city driving. The latter number was during a warmer spell here in the northeast with some highway driving mixed in. Mileage is certainly not the strongpoint, but hey its a truck.
