Running Rough out of nowhere

95 F150 XLT 5.0

My truck has always ran great. About two weeks ago I let my wife drive to take kids somewhere because I had to work on her car. She said that it was running good and out of nowhere it started feeling like it was running out of gas. She said she didn't notice any sounds or anything until it started acting up.

I did run out of fuel about two weeks prior to this since the fuel gauge doesn't work, not sure if this has something to do with it or not.

It idles fine. When I rev the engine up while in park it does fine until I give it about half throttle and then it bogs down sputtering and backfiring. When driving, it doesn't want to go unless the "sweet spot" is reached with the throttle. Barely goes up hills. Once I get up to speed the desired speed it seems fine. But any acceleration is hesitant and rough. It also has a hard time shifting, I'm guessing due to the lack of power?

I went ahead and changed the fuel filter since it needed it anyways.

Took it to a mechanic who instructed me to clean throttle body, TPS and MAF and then go from there. I went ahead and replaced TPS since I had everything apart and cleaned up everything else. Also replaced gasket.

Ive changed the plugs and wires. Checked for vacuum leaks. The mechanic checked fuel pressure and said it's right where it needs to be, don't remember specific number.

I unplugged O2 sensor to see if it would run different. Nothing changed.

The battery light also occasionally comes on and the odometer and speedometer all quit working the same time the problems started. Battery and alternator are good.

I've been going through these forums trying things to see if any changes occur and nothing has helped.

It was a code regarding fuel pump I believe but it showed up because I removed the relay to relieve fuel line pressure when I changed the filter. It was the only one.

Speed sensor on the rear axle? That can affect the ABS, speedo, odo, and transmission shifting.

Figured the speed sensor, but for all of this to be happening all at once, was wondering if it is all linked or just a coincidence. Lol.

Depends on the software, the lack of speed sensor could be putting it into a 'limp home' mode.

Pull your codes. I picked up a Bluetooth ODBII unit a while back on the internet. Best fifteen dollars I ever spent. It came with the Torque app.

I can read and pull codes as well as look at live info if needed. Soooooo much more than just simple code readings. Hell, Torque will even give you mpg and miles to empty if you want to set a gauge for it. Checking pressures and temps on a test run live is a blessing!

OBD2 wasn't till 1996, 1995 was OBD1/EEC and you can't use an OBD2 scanner, no place to plug it in. You need an EEC code reader or use the paperclip and count CEL flashes method.

ACH! You're right! My bad.

But if you have a newer truck it's well worth it. Did some hunting around. Found one pretty cheep but had the Torque app. That's the trick.

The 95 Mustang V6 I bought for my son was OBDII. My 95 Mark VIII Lincoln was OBDI. Hard to understand some things.

There were a few vehicles in 1994 and 1995 that had OBD2, but it wasn't required till 1996 on cars and light duty trucks. The 96 and 97 Super Duty with the 460 were not OBD2.
