2004 5.4 V3 Replace engine Yes-No

I have an F150 4x4 with 230000 mil the phasers are shot and its leaking oil from the front of the engine relay bad, not sure where. I'm thinking on replacing the engine with a rem man or used. Is this a good idea or am i wasting my time and money. I will have to hire someone to put the engine in.
thanks for any advice.

We just put a reman in our 2004. It was costly. The only reason we did it was that we still owed about 5K on the truck (Beautiful truck that sounded like a Cummings w/175 miles on the odometer. Told the wife not to buy it, but she did anyway..It was pretty) and never would have got anything out of it in resale with a dead engine (engine died at 190K). Don't forget you are going to have to replace fuel injectors, coils and other things. The 5.4 motor is one that should have never been built. We have put another 20K miles on the new motor and it has just been one trouble light after another. Mostly little things, but it has got very old. It's going up for sale soon. Somebody is going to get a deal, lots of new parts. Wish they still made them like my old 1968 F-250 Camper Special. Also kind of a crap shoot on remands. Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you don't. If you decide to do it, get one with a warranty that covers shop labor in replacing any reman motor, not just the motor.

I just put about $6,000 into my 117,000 mile '04 FX4. Engine, labor, related parts. Probably not worth putting 6K into a 7K or 8K truck, but I didn't find any used (GM) ones in any better shape for what I though was fair money.

All depends on the budget and your desires. The engine is the most expensive thing to replace but there are other things that could cost you in the near future. Buying used is always a crap shoot to some extent. Think about it and decide what is right for you and your situation.

I agree. I'd probably never consider buying a used 3V. Asking price is usually $2000, and it would be unwise to install without updating the timing chain, guides, tensioners, phasers, and oil pump which all total up to about $800. At least the reman comes with a warranty.
