Question Trouble code P0430

I have a '97 F-150 supercab 4X4 with auto and 4.6L. Check engine light has come on twice. Thought it might be gas cap since it happened after filling up. Reset by dissconnecting battery. this time it came back on and I got a code reader and it came up with only one code...P0430.
Manual says this means "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank No. 2). What's up with this? Is there something I can do or is it a "give a Ford Service Center alot of $$ to fix deal?"

Thanks in advance for your help.

How many miles are on the truck? My guess (and it's only a guess) is that your catalytic converters on the passengers side are right on the verge of needing to be replaced. I believe that trouble code indicates the O2 sensor behind the cats are detecting the HC levels above the "malfunction threshold."

I would agree with shange442 except the part of which bank is which. I'm not sure if bank 2 is passenger side or driver side. Seems that bank 2 would be driver side as it has plug #'s 5-8

The truck has 128,000 miles. The truck has two cat. convertors? It has a single exhaust. I haven't crawled under the truck, is it a bolted inline convertor like most vehicles?

Thanks,
Kevin

At 128,000 miles it's a pretty safe bet they need to be replaced. Most of the cars I have seen over the years are ready to have them replaced around 90K - 100K miles.

The truck probably has 4 cats total, (2 cats and 2 pre-cats) and there should a left and right side. The exhaust starts out as a dual exhaust setup, goes through the cats, then Y's together into a single exhaust. It should unbolt, and the left and right sides should seperate - however the factory installed exhaust clamp has probably dimpled the metal beyond a self - install. You probably need a muffler shop to change them out - but maybe not. KYFordFreak is probably right about it being the driver's side. I am still thinking in GM terms

bank 2 is the right side ,and i got the same code on my 2006 f150 with 72000 kms on it
already replace both O2 sensors , still have the code po430 checking for vaccuum leaks , didnt find and along with no exhaust leaks . i read somewhere that if the truck was flooded that the gas in the oil could trigger this code . is this true ? and a bad ECT

You revived a thread that was dead for SEVEN YEARS?

Bank 2 is the left side. Ford considers left and right relative to sitting in the driver's seat.

O2 sensors do not, by themselves, cause catalyst efficiency codes. Don't waste money replacing them.

US (except Cal) warranty on the cats is 8 years/80K miles. Since you gave your odometer in kms, I'm guessing Canada. Check your written emissions warranty in your owner's manual and see what is covered for Canadian owners. You may well be messing with a problem that will be fixed for free by your local Ford dealer.
