Informative info on the 5.4 Liter.....
While browsing for information on camshaft timing, I found the following webpage with some great pics, with comments from the developer, on the 5.4 liter engine:

Great pictures & commentary. I wonder what year motor? My '00
has the oil filter in a horizontal position & no cooler to my know-
ledge. In fact, my neighbors' new 5.3 Chevy has a much easier
filter to access. (Never mind the fact that it has 5,000 miles on it
& he is going to have to take it in to find out why he is continually adding OIL !!!)

Pretty neat link, decent photos of engine and details.
However, IMO, based on the words spoken through the text with the pics, doesn't sound like the person had anything to do with the design/development.
He/She only talks in such a way like they are making discoveries instead of statemens of how they designed something. My guess is that the lab depicted is not at the Ford Engine Lab but from some independent person or aftermarket engine parts design/development firm.
My $0.02

I had heard that the knock sensor was buried under the intake manifold. I hope they last forever. I can see it now,I'm talking to a mechanic ten years from now and this is the diagnosis.....I'm sorry to have to tell you this sir,but it's the knock sensor. It's going to be $1500 to replace it

Hollow camshafts are not new, but 'pressed on lobes' are sure new to me. Hope they hold up for the long term. Roller rockers are a nice feature. My new '01 5.4 has a black intake manifold that, I am guessing, is plastic to reduce weight and improve heat dissapation.
BTW, I would like to compliment the fellow for posting pics of engine. Its interesting to see what the engine looks like in my new truck. Looks like a nice clean repair shop to me operated by a Ford fan.

Taking note of the timing chain tensioners, it's a wonder the engine is so quiet.
Seeing the engine without the intake is kind of freaky. It's almost like I expect the engine to crack in half right down the middle.

Hey Guys,
Am I missig something here or are the roller rockers I'm used to something different. I was raised on high performance cars and trucks and the roller rockers I'm familiar with actually have rollers where they contact the valve stems, hence roller rockers and they always cost big bucks.
Help me out here cause I don't see rollers in the pics. This sounds like a bunch of bull, Ford isn't gonna put racing valve train in a stock production pickup just 'cause they can, it has to be cost effective. What am I missin' here?

HI!... If anyone is interested in more detail pics of a torn down 5.4, e-mail me. I took a lot of pics while tearing down my crate 5.4 engine. Mabey someone that can post pics on here can post them up for me. I don't have the faintest idea how to do it.lol!
The "plastic" manifold is auctually an interesting thing, it has "gates" in it that open up at higher rpms giving it a high rise effect to increase power at the top range. Yet it will still have fuel effiency at normal ranges.
