2004 Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor replacement

Hey guys, my 2004 5.4 is throwing codes for a CHT sensor. I am going to trade the truck in soon, but wanted to change the sensor before I did so to get that check engine light off. Is this a job most anyone can tackle at home, or should I take it in to have it done (if so, how much $$$ am I looking at)? I've read it can done by removing the alternator, while I saw other posts saying the intake has to be removed. Also, if the CHT sensor isn't causing the problem, and its actually the CHT sensor wires or wire harness, how big of a job is that to swap out?

Thank you very much for any information!!!

Jeff

??? What Codes ???. Another member ( @jbrew ) requested them in another one of your posts a month ago. There are several "codes" relating to CHT. Instead of your diagnosing the symptom and telling everybody here its the CHT sensor, why not capitalize on knowledge / experience of members. A code mentioning "CHT" does not mean that sensor is bad, and I'm betting it is not the sensor. If it is bad, you WILL have other very serious symptoms. Your engine has no coolant temperature sensor. Coolant temperature is calculated by the PCM from the CHT reading. The PCM does a "recalibration" test on the sensor EACH run cycle. If its readings are not "rational", you'll get an appropriate code. If they are just too high - like hot - the PCM will go into "limp" mode running on alternate four cylinders, and on and on. So provide some codes and let members apply diagnostic logic to them.
-- YES you can do it yourself. and NO you cannot change the CHT without removing the IM. The CHT is located under the intake manifold between between cyl 3 & 4. The following link, - on a different subject - but very well may be applicable here based upon your other posts --- BTW, in which thread I notice you determined the codes meant 'bad' O2 Sensors!

In the third photo of Post #4, You can see the CHT on Bank 1 head, and you can see the vacuum hoses you were asking about in the other thread.

Just saw this. Thank you for replying. I don't have the code, just going off what the mechanic told me.
