STP and other additives
Do any of you use any additives when you change your oil. I gave my truck it's first oil change at about 2300 miles and I used motorcraft 5w30. Since overhead cams supposedly need oil at the top asap, would it be smart to add something like STP that supposedly clings to the cams and other things to help reduce start up wear? We use STP in everything else we have and have never had any problems with it. I am probably going to switch to Mobil1 senthetic in the 150 at about 10,000 miles. Can you use STP with a synthetic oil?

Just use a good quality motor oil, and leave the additives on the store shelves. DONT USE THEM! They do more harm than good. If you switch to Mobil 1, you certainly dont want to degrade it with garbage like STP.

LHM,
STP was supposed to be the oil additive back in the 70's and some of the 80's. However, since then all the oil companies are blending their own additives into their oil. I'm not sure, but if I were you I would do some research to make sure stp's additives aren't impairing the manufacturer's additives, or a least check on stp's miscibility with you oil brand's additives. Wish I could help more, but I'm not real familiar with stp products.

I don't see the need for an additive with synthetic either. I will just use the motorcraft 5w30 until I get enough miles to switch to synthetic. I just don't feel comfortable towing a gooseneck horse trailer with 5w30 oil during North Carolina summers, eventhough the oil cooler is a plus. It will just make the synthetic better.

When you put additives in your oil you are changing the makeup that the oil manufacture specifically designed. In some cases you can have adverse reactions with different additive packages. Because you are adding disproportionate amounts of different additives that are called for from the oil manufacture.
Just stick with a high quality oil and keep it clean(by using a clean air and oil filter)
Better yet use synthetics with a top quality filter.
Of Coarse I prefer Amsoil synthetic, and Amsoil Super duty oil filter. But MOB 1 or similar synthetic are way above conventional oil.

You don't have to wait for a certain mileage to switch to synthetic oil. Some have suggested waiting until 7000 or even 15,000 miles. The owners manual on page 2 states that there are "no particular break in requirements" for the Triton engine. Years ago new vehicles had to be kept at 55 or less for the first 1,000 miles..but not anymore.
I put Mobil 1 Synthetic in at 650 miles and the engine has been running without a single problem.
Some manufacturers put synthetic in at the factory..in new engines....and many more would if it was not so expensive. You will not cause any harm at all or void your warranty if you put it from day-one.
