What does a typical head gasket job cost from the stealership?

Anybody know what a "fair" head gasket job would run?

Should I get my water pump, timing chain (guides/tensioners) replaced too?

Valve job and valve seals while heads are off to have them resurfaced?

Thanks for any advice.

If you can find a reputable shop, they should be a little cheaper than the dealer.

In 2009, my 1998 4.6 with about 190,000 miles had a slight leak at the #8 cylinder. It wasn't bad, no coolant in the combustion chamber or oil, but there was a consistent orange puddle after every run.

My local big city dealerships estimated $2800-$3500 to replace head gaskets and overall engine gaskets only. Their price did not include new water pump, timing chain, guides, etc.

I ended up getting my fathers street rodder friend to do the work. He was a municipal fleet mechanic and had a professional shop at his house (lift, air tools, diag. Equip.) We used Ford parts and had both heads machined. Funny thing, I distinctly remember seeing 5.4 cast in the rear of each head. 5.4 heads on a 4.6.

I believe both engines use the same heads.
