99' F250. Which engine?

Hi guys,
I'm really hoping someone here can answer this for me.

Short version is, my F250 has the 235hp version of the 5.4 L code, and I'm wondering what engines are direct replacements for my truck? I'd love to get the newer version(ie. 00-04), but I'm not sure what all would transfer or if it's even worth it.

Also, everywhere I look it lists pre 8/98 and post 8/98 5.4. How do I tell which I have?

My truck has blown the passenger head gasket and manifold gasket, and has 220k on it, so I figure I can replace the engine for about the same as paying someone to replace my head gasket.

Thanks in advance guys.

the difference is the PI (performance improved) heads, cams and intake manifold. The pistons were also revised for the new heads.

You can swap a complete PI engine (post 8/98) in for sure

You can also do a PI top end swap on to your 97 and get a little better power. The compression will be higher than either the PI or non PI due to the pistons and smaller combustion chambers of he PI heads. Do a search and you can find more information about this.

Good to know. Since mine is the cutoff year, how can I tell which engine I have by looking at it?

Also, forgive me if I'm wrong, but are you Bill Hardman by chance?

The 235 hp version is non-PI. The PI engine is 260 hp.

I understand that much, and I'm fairly certain that mine in the non-pi at this point.

I'm really looking for like a picture of the two to know for certain, as well as wondering, if mine is in fact a non-pi, what all would I need for a full pi engine to be installed, or will it be a direct drop in?

Thanks, guys

The PI would need to be installed with PI intake and exhaust manifolds. I don't know what would have to be swapped over from the old engine but as far as bolting up there's no difference that I'm aware of.

I don't think so, but it sure wouldn't hurt.
