2008 f150 sudden engine shut down

My 2008 F150 4.6L with 65k miles suddenly shut down for no apparent reason this morning. It didn't stutter or gradually loose power it was immediate and complete. As I coasted to the shoulder I noticed the "Check Gauges" was displayed in the message center. Once I came to a stop and was able to put it in park, I attempted a restart. The engine took perhaps 3x longer to crank before finally starting.

My first guess would be fuel pump, but I've never had one fail like this. All my experiences with bad fuel pumps have been with them not turning on, and not with them shutting down.

Is there anything the dealer can probe to determine the cause?

Any ideas?

thanks

FPDM?

IF you can get to an Autozone, Advanced, etc, have the codes read - sometimes, FPDM's will set codes (but not always). Having any potential codes in-hand is desirable from a troubleshooting perspective, regardless of cause.

thanks, I have an elm327 scanner I used and it didn't report any codes. It hasn't occurred again, but I'm afraid to think of when it might.

As that thread suggests, drop the spare, locate the FPDM, remove it and visually inspect. Only takes a few minutes to rule this item out as yer culprit.

That would be one of the first things I'd check is the FPDM
