5.4 won't maintain idle

this is in ref to my 98 5.4L 4x4 Flareside.

About a month ago, my truck started to have problems staying running. Specifically, it will start and rev to 1000 rpm then immediately die. I have to start it and apply gas to keep it running. (normal rpm idle for it is 600)
I utimately have to drive it while maintaining gas (shifting to N and revving at lights/stops). It has been going on for a month and is becoming more frequent. Doesn't matter if engine is warm or cold. No "check engine" idiot light unless it dies on me (which it does at least once a drive). As u can imagine, this is quite frustrating.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Thumbs up

Hi 98, glad to help out a fellow VA boy!

It's your IAC. They get fouled and stick. Until you clean it or just replace it (about $60) here's what you do.

Start carrying a long heavy screwdriver. Next time she won't idle just tap the IAC a couple of times with the screwdriver and she will fire right up, garunteed!

What's that? Where's the IAC?

Why it's on top the motor and on the 5.4L it's located directly under the right windshield wiper post. It has a hose feeding out to the left.

And '98 if you need anything else you just let me know.

Yep

Mister Grand Poobah Smarty Pants Esquire (aka Raoul) is exactly right.
I had the exact same symptoms you describe and the dealer gratiously replaced my IAC free of charge even though I was out of warranty(I did alot of bitching that day about many things). Fixed that problem completely.

Not to butt heads with anyone, but my dad's truck did the same thing two months ago. The dealer was familiar with the IAC problem, and they replaced it. Less than two hours after we picked it up, it was doing it again. After two weeks going through about everything the dealer could think of electronically and mechanically, they decided to replace pieces one at a time until it was resolved. After four days, it came to be determined that it was the stupid fuel pump causing all the grief! It's not skipped a beat yet!

Unhappy I got a lump on my head...

Good info adamski, although the IAC is a very common problem, if poking it with the jack handle or a screwdriver does not resolve the idling problem then '98 should have that fuel pump checked out.
