Question Power loss on 89 5.0L

My 89 with 302 has been experiencing a power loss when the engine is under a load i.e. when pulling a trailer or going into a strong headwind. When this occurs the engine will ping very loudly, the transmission continually shifts out of overdrive, and the truck will not go over about 65mph. I have had several mechanics attempt to fix this problem. They always want to replace the fuel filter, but it has been done and did not help. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have you checked fuel pressure? Do you have a code scanner?

I too am suspicious of your fuel system. It sounds like it's leaning out. I believe the 89 was still the 3 pump system. Does this problem occur regardless of which tank you are using (assuming it has two fuel tanks) ?

Chris--I have a 89 too, and yes mine is the 3-pump system.

Does the truck hesitate on both tanks? I would check line pressure.

Everyone who suggested to check the fuel system is correct. Also, any time an older engine is losing power, it's probably a good idea to do a compression test to get an idea of the condition of your rings/valves.
