ok here it is . i was at a local track the other night and i was talking to a guy about this. he said when he goes to the track he changes out the belt on his mustang to a shorter one so the engine will turn up faster. he said that he just bypasses the power steering to get the shorter lenght. is this possible to do on my 4.2l v6. i am no mechanic so what all can you bypass or can this be done. thanks in advance
hmm...the way I see it, it's not the shorter length of the belt that helps. It's the fact that he has bypassed his PS pump which frees up the horsepower that was used to turn the pump. This would require a shorter belt.
I have never heard of this before, but then I am not a drag racer. (I assume you are at a drag track if this guy is disabling his power steering pump). Even though drag racers are supposed to go straight, it still sounds a little dangerous to me.

Short belt
It can be done, I did something similar on my Mustang, Bypassed the smog pump and ac. Should be able to notice that. If you are just doing it for racing, you could also bypass the alternater, or rig it as mentioned on this board a while back. Put the alternater on a switch that you could turn off, it was said to return a noticable gain. Never tried it though.

Why don't you just put on some power pulley's to free up a few horse power but still have full use of the power steering pump, alt.,and the A/C compressor. I'm not a drag racer or anything like that but seen on Horsepower TV that doing that frees upto 5 hp from the stock setup.
