B&M Shiftkit: FAME OR SHAME?
For those of you who own it, or have owned it, is it good?

I feel that on older (non-computer) automatic transmission it does a good deed. I wouldn't mind having it on my Aod Transmission. But I think that on the newer trannys such as the E4od, a computer chip is good enough.
I had a 78 F-150 my Dad bought new, that I recently gave to my Daughter & Son-Inlaw, that now has 210,000 miles on it, the motor has been changed twice but still has the original C-6 in it. The transmission has never been rebuilt. I put a B&M shift kit in it when it had about 40,000 miles on it. (set it up for the most firm shift possible) I've since kept the fluid & filter changed yearly & adjusted the bands, and the transmission still shifts good. I feel the B&M shift kit & being serviced regularly is why its still going. You cut down on the slippage, that reduces the heat which is what kills an automatic transmission. I think it was a good investment. I have no idea how these would fair in the new transmission though.

Some info, but I still need a little more

Fast: I wouldn't put it on the new transmissions. Go with a Superchip, it is enough. The c-6 was Ford's best Automatic, but it stunk, because of no overdrive. It was almost bulletproof, and I remember my friend has a 78 F-150 351M/C-6 and he would have to mash the pedal for it to shift into another gear, I believe the B&M changed that.
Would it cause a problem? The superchip is still on my list, just thought the B&M would do good for now.

If you are talking the "Shift Plus" from B&M, I would avoid it like the plague. Everyone that I know of that had one on their E4OD ended up with a wasted computer. It would burn up a resistor inside the computer. I still have a almost new one in the box. A chip will do about the same thing(but not burn up your PCM). If you are talking about a "valve body" kit for a late model transmission, I only have experience with the older non-electronic transmissions.

Mike, I couldn't disagree more. I have installed 14 of them (10 GM and 4 Ford) in the last year, and every single one has had nothing but great results. Perhaps the ones you are referring to were not installed correctly, but that would surprise me as they are simple to install. I think they are the best thing since sliced bread. It gives you 3 different levels of shift "hardness" at the flip of a switch, and you don't even have to get anywhere near the tranny to install it. I am sorry to hear that your friends have not had good results, but I must say that that is the first and only negative thing I have heard about them.
Take care,
~Chris

Chris, It seems that the problem that I was referring to was in 96 and older applications. You may know of 4 that work, but I think I can find at least 10 that burnt the PCMs up on 96 and older models with E40D's. If I work the net I bet it would be more like a 100. There was much talk on the Bronco list to file a class action suite against B&M but it never came to be (that I know of). I thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread till the reports started coming in. Maybe they dont damage other models, but if someone wants mine I will send it to them if they pay the postage. (and it didnt even burn up my pcm)It usually took a few weeks for the pcm to get toasted.

My friend has one on his Expedition 2wd 4.6l and likes it very much. He has since added a Superchip, and has tried it with and without the B&M. While the Superchip alone improves shifting quite a bit, he has been running the B&M at its softest setting with the chip and is very pleased.
