Blown engine crossroads

My 2002 XLT engine blew out the timing chain guide and most likely damaged the motor. With 210,000 miles on it , Is it worth it to fix it with a new engine or just start looking to upgrade to a newer less mileage model. What model years should I avoid and or look for ?

What's it going to run you to fix the truck? What's it worth with a blown motor? I wouldn't realy avoid any year/model f150. It just depends on your needs, and funds

All depends on your finances, how much money you want to spend and how you feel about the truck. Also what is the condition of the rest of the truck. An 02 with a blown engine is worth almost nothing by itself. If money is tight put a used engine in it. A new rebuilt engine if someone else installs it will cost as much as the truck is worth after the replacement but would still be cheaper than buying another truck.

New engine would be $4500.00 to $5000.00. But then I wonder whats gonna go next.

Ford was supplied a batch of injectors that had a tenancy to fail occasionally. They could start leaking and hydro lock the engine. Just some if the 2005s. They extended the warranty with a letter, which is posted in a stickie thread at the top of the 2005 forum

you would exceed over half the value of the truck...is it worth it then?

If you could find a good low mile used engine I would go that route but to spend 5 grand on a new engine doesn't make sense to me unless the truck holds some sentimental value for you. Sometimes you just have to move on to something new.

X2

Used engine with 50-120k for 1000-1500. Do the work yourself if possible. It takes some work but at the end of the day you still own your truck and are back into for another few years. Otherwise I would not spend 5k on a motor... Id be off to buy a newer one.

That's probably the right choice. Sometimes even new rebuilt engines aren't what they are supposed to be.

In 97 my 86SS Monte Carlo engine was replaced with a new 36K, 3 year, GM Goodwrench 350 engine. That engine was replaced under warranty. The second engine was replaced under warranty. By this time I had bought another car and it was used as a backup or spare. The 3rd new engine was also a pos. After sitting for a good while, it would smoke like crazy. I was hanging on to it just for a retirement project. Finally, I just sold it to a young car enthusiast who with his dad rebuilt old Chevy hot rods. So, it went to someone who knew what he was getting into. I was relieved to get it out of my garage.

Maybe a new Ecoboost in your future?!!

The first thing that you should do, IMO, is to find out what's wrong with your engine and how much it would cost to fix. That's probably going to be your cheapest option.
