Anyone have/had piston slap in 4.6?
My mother say that she has been hearing a knocking when her 4.6 is cold. I heard it for myself this past weekend. It is different than what my 5.4 had. While idling you don't hear a thing. When you accelerate in gear it sounds exactly the way my 5.4 did on start up. Anyone have this on there 4.6?
Fast 46...
It is quite possibly Piston slap and you need to have your engine replaced or you are not using the proper oil filter (one with an S designation).
There are all kinds of posts in this forum (engines) dealing with both of these issues.

yep, i got it. couldnt replicate when left
with ford overnight (i indeed was present).
told it was becuase i was using synthetic oil. yeah, right. they changed oil, doing
it more with conventional. the eighth position in my vin is a "w", i guess this means windsor (the problem ones.) gonna let it get a little worse and go back to dealer again.

Hey did your 4.6 do this in the summer? Mine started making a deiseling sound when I would acelerate hard. It started when I was "up north" and then a month or so later "down here" It doesn't do it on start up though. Know what it is? In my case, it is the "winter gas treatment" used in the gas tanks to keep them from freezing and to help our cars use up the moisture that is created from the condensation in the tanks at the station. You can help to elimimate the condensation in your Trucks tank also by keeping it full!
If I listen to the motor and acelerate to just under that threshold, and gradually go to the floor, it doen't make the noise and I can still get a pretty awesome take off.
Bummer! just when you experience the power gains from lower temps, you lose it to the gas treatment!!

Ive got the same sort of sound from my 4.6. During cold starts, it "knocks" for a couple of seconds, but if you wind it up, you can get it to knock for a while (especially around 3 grand)Ive got a romeo too!!!

According to Ford, the Romeo engines (yes they have a W just to make it confusing) do not have piston slap. That doesn't mean your engine doesn't have a problem, it just means you probably have a different problem.
Apparently there are a number of other possibilities. The most common problem appears to be the use of the wrong oil filter. Make sure you are using an oil filter with an anti drain back valve. It will have an S designation. If you don't use the proper filter with these engines, oil drains out of the filter and it takes a while to get back into the engine on start up. This not only causes knock, it is damaging to your engine. There have been a number of people who have had this problem and have confused it (understandably) with piston slap. Hope it is something as simple as that.

The cat is not quite out of the bag on this one, but it is only a matter of time. The bottem end is failing on both of these engines. My roomate has the 4.6 Ford with a new engine(knock) and a fiend at work has the 5.4 Ford with a new engine.(knock) In both cases the service manager said the bottom end was failing. FYI

oh, great another misinformed person. the pistons have nothing to do with the bottom end. And people have put well over 100,000 miles on slapping motors. Never has there been a reliability concern, just a noise upon cold start up. If you want to know about bottom ends failing, check your 99 5.3 rod bearings, they tend to go bad.

Let's all make sure we listen to our all knowing service managers. You know the ones that can't duplicate our problems or find anything wrong. I'll bet if we take our trucks to Chevy dealerships the great gods that take care of the never fail Chevys could fix us right up. Of course Chevys never break down according to the guys that post here so they must have plenty of time on their hands to fix our trucks. I think I'll run right out tomorrow so some poor Chevrolet mechanic has some work! Better yet I should just trade for one of these wonerful trucks that we have been told are so vastly superior in every way to our Fords so then I can come back here and bad mouth Fords. Wow all this from a post that the bottom end of my 4.6 is failing. Look buddy when you get a clue come back and we can have an informed discusion, until then....... ( sorry all but I've had about all I can take of these Shovie owners)
Well THAT does it!! I'm gonna run right out and get a 99 Silverado 5.3 because Sweet99Chevy said so. Then I can be superior too.
I will have no problems ditching my Ford because amazingly enough, the other guys (chevy owners) where I work that drive their Trucks for a living like I do, have made me plenty of offers on mine!
Good thing you pointed out how stupid we all were to have fords! Do you have any other tips on how I should invest money, live, dress, speak, eat, or sleep ect.? I wanna be just like you. Uh does this mean I should sell my house too and get a Roomate?

I too had a couple of times when mine ticked for a couple of seconds. This was after the truck had sat for 4 days with out start up. Mine sounded like valve tick and went away in about three seconds. Never did it if I ran it every day or so. Had the oil changed at Ford (had a coupon for a free one). It went away. Conclusion: Wrong Filter. I am going to recheck what my local jiffy guy is using and if he is not using what I want I will provide it from now on.
Ford claims these engines are not failing, just noisy. No one here has claimed their engines failed. I believe them so far.
