I've come to the conclusion that K&N Sucks...

Okay, I started using K&N Air Filters on my following trucks in the past:

1997 Ford F150 4x4 5.4L: Used...check engine light came on 3500 miles. I figured that since it was a used truck...no big deal.

2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 4.7L: Installed it at 20000miles...upon selling the truck @ 30k the same thing...check engine light.

2001 Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel 4X4: Installed it, had the truck for about 5000 miles...no problem.

2001 Ford F150 Supercrew 5.4L V8. I bougt this thing with less than 100 miles. After reading about how good the filters are, and that they aren't causing any problems I went ahead and installed it @ 500 miles. Guess what...I'am now at 1800 miles and my check egine light has just come on.

This is rediculous! If I ran the filter for thousands and thousands of miles and this happened...yea...I guess you could put more blame on me....but these are new trucks! Well, I guess I'll have to remove the filter, remove my superchip, and hassle with the dealership to replace what is probably my MAF sensor. Thanks alot K&N! I hope you guys learned a lesson...3 out of 4 of my trucks have the same problem...all caused a little after the K&N was installed. DAMN!

Bought a K&N filter for my 96 Bronco Tuesday, 50 miles later "check engine"light came on. I'm interested to see what code pops up.

Unhappy K&N Blues...

Sorry to hear about your K&N. I have run them in 2 other Ford's, and 4 GM's. Never a problem... Read thru these posts, it seems like K&N is aware of the MAF problems in the 97-2001 trucks. Check into Holley Power Shot filters. They guarantee no problems with contaminating your MAF.

Good Luck...

Had the drop in in my 98 Expy for 20,000 or so and the Gen II FIPK in my F-150 for 16,000 or more , no problems with either. Might try cleaning the MAF sensor with a little Windex on a Q-tip, I have heard of others using it and it works.

Cool

I will agree with Red Y2K Sport on this one. I put mine on and about a couple of months of a lot of driving, the truck seemed sluggish. I took everything apart from the air filter to the throttle body off of the intake and clean it all with Carb cleaner. Now I never had any engine lights come on put I have heard that sometimes the filters come from the factory with a little too much oil on them. This oil will come off and coat the other parts of the air intake track. Try this and see how it works before dealing with the dreaded dealerships.

I've had a similar issue....
CE light came on....Checked codes; Bank 2 lean. Non descript solutions...HEGO, Carbon canister system (?), injector, etc.
Had the codes cleared & light came back after 1 week. Removed the K&N; Light cleared after ~3-5days/runs & 1 tank of 89 octane.

CE came back on 2 months later...This time was certain it was because I didn't tighten the Gas Cap last fill up. Tightened the cap, and ran another tank of 89 octane. Light again cleared after ~3-5days & hasn't reappeared in the last 3 weeks.

Still have the K&N sitting in the garage...Not sure if I'll put it back in (~30kmiles on it).

Turns out that my engine light was the egr valve and nothing to do with the K&N filter. I asked the mechanic that works on my truck about the 97-01 K&N problem and he told me that the MAF sensor gets a coat of oil from the K&N filter, and causes the engine light error.

Wink No problem with mine

Just want to put my experience in here too. Using the "drop in" filter and put it in about 6 months/10k miles ago and no problems at all. (71k on truck)

I've only checked it a couple of times, but no hint of dust behind the filter, no oil residue any place. Maybe you have gotten some that had too much oil in them from the start and they are coating the MAF sensor.

I have not had to service mine yet. Still looks pretty clean, but as I understand how these filters work, the dirtier they get, the better they work! (to a point, of course) You also do not want to over do it on the oiling when you do service them. I think the less oil you use, the better it works too.

Just my thoughts

No problem with my K&N Filter. The check engine light did come on before the filter was installed and the local lube shop did a "clean out" of the injectors and engine, a few days later the light went off and hasn't come back on. I also cut the stock air box out and there are still no problems. I have had the same filter for 13 months and have cleaned it twice.

No problems here.

The K&N Airfilter really makes a difference after 4K miles.

No problems here. I second on the over-oiling and the solution of MAF cleaning.
