01 5.4l Blue Smoke on Start Ups
My 2000 F-150 4.6L did it from about 4,000 miles about 1 out of every 10-20 starts. At first my dealer said it was normal to happen with that frequency that the engines were designed to do that. Not only didn't I buy into that, I could hardly keep myself from laughing!
Anyhow, after about 12,000 miles I started noticing drops of il on the driveway (in addition to everything else that was going wrong) so I had a Ford engineer inspect my truck. He found that the passenger side head gasket was leaking and would need replacement. That may not be the cause of the smoke at startup but it should at least serve as a "heads-up"...

I noticed a little puff of smoke one morning on startup. The truck had been sitting in the garage for a couple of days. I purchased the truck with 4k miles and have 6k miles on it now. I don't know what motorcrap oil was in it when I took delivery from the dealer. I changed it out this past weekend with my regular oil Mobil1 5w-30 full snythetic. I will pay attention to it over the next couple of days to see if I get a puff or not.
I had this problem with mine from day 1, I figured I would give
the "new modular" engine a chance. Figured maybe a little
blowby, rings seating.
Well, after 5K, I called the dealer. Oh, that's normal, you know
with the humidity and all.
WTF!!!!!!!!! I live in the far reaches of S-W TX, hell, we are the
dryest part of TX. As I recall we have had all of 3" of rain all year.
I'm surrounded by mesquite and various cacti, and an endless
supply of dirt. Humidity my A..
I knew it had to be oil burning. They said wait a few more months and if it hadn't cleared bring it in. Well, 5K more
and the same thing. It didn't matter how hot or dry it was
it was happening.
My father and my father-inlaw are/were both diesel/gas mechanics for many a years. I gave them my clues and they said valve seats.
I go to ford. They are clueless. How come it doesn't smoke now?
Let it sit, jackass. Next morn, OH yea, it does smoke.
3 weeks later, it was the valve seats.
Demand the dealer have the heads inspected. They had to pull one of and inspect it to "verify".
21K and that prob was fixed. Don't get me started on the others.
BTW, I had to take it back 3 more times for them to fix all the crap they messed up when I went in the first time.
