1999 F-150 4x4

I bought this truck new in '99 and it is still running (and I still drive it daily)with almost 300k and so far no major investment other than a fuel pump recently. I am getting to the point however where I am going to need, no actually want, to make some changes and I think I want to start under the hood as a new motor is FARRRRRRR cheaper than a new truck. I would like something with a bit more umph than the original 5.4l triton had though and was wondering what are some good options here? I know there has to be someone on here that has hoe'd this road before so I am asking you what has worked for you. I am thinking my HP threshold will be no more than 400 engine hp and I am not thrilled at the aspect of a Turbo although I may consider a charger (I know damn the difference). What I am after is a really strong, or bulletproof, engine package that will serve me for another 300k. Once I can get this done then I will work on transmission, suspension, lift, tires, ect. until get what I have always envisioned this truck to be. OK so hit me up with your knowledge and experience. Thaks in advance for your help.

The only way you'll ever see 400 ponies is if you go super charged and built bottom end with forged pistons and rods. Plan on doing your trans at the same time and the rear end is likely going to need a refresh.

Right,- you won't get 400 NA HP with that engine. You can with a blower.. No what that is
