Question... If 5w30 oil doesn't cut-the-mustard in sizzl'n climates and the modular OHC engines *do* start frying while under warranty (and FORD has to shell out big bucks for new engines), don't you think FORD would be the FIRST to ammend the owners manuals and offer... let's say: 0w30, 5w30, 10w30 choices, depending on climate? I'll go by the book, 5w30. If my engine dies, I've got it in writing. BTW, for everybody that has wishy-washy dealers telling them that 10w30 "will not void the warranty"... have them to put it IN WRITING and SIGN IT, they might be eating those words someday.

If the t-bird lady went to the same dealership everytime, and they put in the oil, if they didn't tell her it was going to void her warranty, they should cough up the warranty. If I went to my dealer and asked him to put in water instead of oil at my first oil change, you think they would say it will void my warranty? you bet! I bet they wouldn't even do it if i insisted! the dealership is sticking it to her for their mistake. How many oil changes did she do there? I am sure if they told her it would void, she would not do it...who is supposed to be the expert on the car anyways? us or the dealership?

Cloaker,

I believe from NascarF150's post that the lady had oil changes done at a place other than her dealer. Now if she specifically ASKED for 10W-30 she technically may have no way out but if the shop that did the oil changes arbitrarliy used 10w-30 then she can bring legal action against them....they should know what the "book" says to use.

NascarF150,

You still didn't answer any of my questions...

She did have the oil changed at one of those *quick lubes*, and as far as I know... maybe she IS suing them. To the "Middle-Aged Kid"... my point on the 5w30 issue is crystal clear and as for everything that the dealership said about the engine... if they told the *truth*, then I'm glad to be using 5w30. If they lied through their teeth just to protect themselves, then I got way better things to do then play their games. BTW, I always go by the book (Pennzoil oil recommendation book) on EVERY car that I change oil on in my shop.

Oops, sorry about that, didn't notice it mentionned she wen't to a quickly lube type place.

Well, she is SOL in my opinion, maybe it's just me, but until my warranty runs out, I go to the ford dealer for oil changes, at briarwood ford, it costs 23$ and they replace the oil filter, oil, and air filter, top off all the liquids free except tranny oil or something like that, grease everything and if anything, I mean anything is not right, they are the ones who can tell.. all that for 23$ every month and a half (3000 miles)? can't beat that, AND they have all the service records they could cry for in the case of a warranty dispute. Am I wrong?

mobil 1 5-30, mobil 1 filter, change oil and filter every 10k, with filter change at 5k. Thinking about changing to Delvac 1, another Mobil synthetic--comes only as 5-40. This is a HD gas/diesel oil made for extended drain intervals--many truckers change this at 60-100k, with no more wear than conventional oils, as per analysis of oil, using special mobil 60k filters (not available fo lt trucks or cars. I have just started using this in a lincoln TC with 60k miles, and will do a mobil analysis at 12k, with filter changes every 4k. Delvac 1 meets the oil cert. requirements for todays engines-car and lt truck, although the 5-40 is higher than ford specifies in the manual. The Mobil distributor in my area had this in his wife's pontiac for 40k, with no filter changes and the analysis showed only an increase in silica-from our unusually dusty area.--I sure won't do it,however!!!

Speaking of oil, back in the early 70's the Frantz oil filter was the big thing. This was a secondary oil filter which used a roll of toilet paper!!!!!!. This was changed between regular oil filter changes. I had it in my Datsun truck and never ran into any engine problems with it.

Penzoil 10W-40 and Fram filters every 3,000 miles and going on 190,000 miles without a valve cover off in the 84 Dodge P/U. Penzoil 10W-30 and Fram in 98 Ford. Hope to get the same results as with the dodge.

Friends, oil is oil, as long as you change it frequently. Synthetics may offer some advantage, but other than that it is all the same (of course I'm talking about the premium, rated oils).

I use redline synthetic and love it I have used it for about two years on my SHO and now on my truck I have found that it keeps the engine cooler in the hot summer and when I am on the gas hard..

Okay. We'll keep it up, BMW325!

I stick to 5W-30, which the factory recommends. Thought about 0W-30 for winter here in Canada but decided to stay with factory grade. In the old days, I used mollases (20W-50) in a '69 TR-6 and 20W-50R (racing) Valvoline a late '70s water-cooled Porsche. In summer, I use 10W-40 in my old '89 Taurus (lots of miles and city and winter driving on her) but go to 5W-30 in the cold months.

Modern motors are tight and efficient. I agree with whoever said the OHC motors have lots more mechanical bits up in the heads and these need oil FAST. The quality of oil, and most filters, is very high today. I'd stick with the thin stuff and change it at 5K miles max. Plus, for me, the 4X cost of synthetic just doesn't make sense.

Maybe, if I brokered a taxi that was almost never shut off, I'd go for the thicker stuff or synthetic.

Oh ya: snazzy Tweetie Bird floor mats.

New 2000 F-150 on order Sept. 2 - sure hope they don't go on strike up here in Canada! Same mechanically as the current one except black, XLT, CD and side steps. Great trucks!

BMW325: Here goes. I have been in the oil refining business for 23 years. I do not profess to know-it-all, but, I have a little different insight into lubricants.
First try to stay away from Pennsylvania based crudestock. These are very high in parafin (wax) content, and, with continued use will show quite a buildup of sludge (wax) inside your engine. Some Penn. based crudes are: Quaker State, Pennzoil, Texaco Havoline, Shell oils. Yes I know millions of happy Quaker State users will scream...These are just the facts.
Yes, synthetic oils are better if you stress your engine enough to need them, most of us don't. I would not trust a Synthetic Blend. To be legally marketed in the U.S., a synthetic blend must only contain 10% synthetic. Is this really enough???
I have raced very successfully for 10 years using Alisyn Synthetics in the engine, gears, and tranny. Have never had an engine or gear failure, EVER. The bad part is price. These lubes are soooo expensive for the average user. Without Alisyn factory sponsorship I could not have done that.
For most normal conditions, a good quality, known oil should be used.
Another interesting fact....Citgo produces and packages outboard motor oil for:Mercury, OMC, Tohatsu, Suzuki, Nissan.. everyone except...Quaker State, Texaco, Shell, and WalMart.
Sorry this got so longwinded, if you have any question, drop me a note at ddracing@netscape.net
