Default 2008 f150 5.4 3 valve timing chain or engine swap?
I have 2008 F150 with a 5.4L 3v vin code "v" with a hole in the valve cover from the timing chain. IS there any way to figure out easily if the engine is trashed? Also I have available an engine from an 09 f250 5.4L vin code "5". I was wondering whether i could install this engine. I just need to know if the basic engine is the same and I could use all of my accessories and sensors etc. from the 08 engine.

The only difference is your vin "V" engine is flex fuel, the vin "5" is not - and there will be other differences due to the trucks being in different emissions classes. The basic engine is the same. I'm guessing you would have to swap intake and exhaust over.

Thanks, The wreckers tell me the 04-08 engines "V" and "5" are basically the same and then the 2009 and up are different. I would like to know those differences, If it just the intake and exhaust and sensors it is no big deal, but if all the accessory mounting bosses and crank to flex plate holes are different that will be a big issue. The engine I can buy is a 10hr drive away.

Another consideration I forgot about - the heads were redesigned in mid-08 to get rid of the sticky 2 piece spark plugs.
