K & N filter replacement
wendell,
if you're talking about a horsepower difference, nah, not really. i like the k&n for it's filtering ability. some will argue, but i have used these filters for many years and never had a problem. plus, it's the last one you should ever have to buy for your truck. good luck, rich.

I have a K&N drop in in my 98 Expy 5.4L, seems like I noticed a little better throttle response also. A 2-3 HP gain in an F-150 or Expy isn't going to be noticed because of the weight of the vehicle. I have seen better performance from my F-150 with the K&N FIPK. Mike Troyer has dyno'd them and if i remember right gives about 15HP increase. Air Force One is even better.

Don't know about that, haven't heard that before.
Probably a good question for Mike. I know there has been a lot of debate over ingesting hot air from under the hood. There was a thread awhile ago where someone, put a temp sensor in front of the grille and another on the FIPK, with readouts in the cab to see what the differences were.

Well,I talked to one dealer(K&N) and they said it was supposed to come with one? The one I bought a couple of years ago had an open box,so I'll never know for sure
He said the one that doesn't come with a guard was the V-10,I believe. I was really confused about that one! Of course I have never seen an F-150 with one installed. Hmmm.....98

I installed a K&N a few days after I bought my truck. The dlr had serviced it and installed a new motorcraft air filter. I noticed an immediate difference in acceleration from stop and throttle response when I installed the K&N.

I have to agree . . .
I've had a K&N for quite some time now on my 97 4.6L. I decided to try the Motorcraft filter again just to see if I could notice any diff (sometimes I find you notice the most when you take something away instead of adding it).
I'm not sure if the K&N gave more "power", but it did improve throttle response and it did give the appearance that the engine was not working as hard to achieve the same results as with the Motorcraft. I have to go up a very long hill with a decent grade on my way home every day. I always keep the od off when going up it. With the Motorcraft, the engine seemed kinda "plugged". it made it up the hill okay but it seemed like it was struggling a little more than with the K&N.
With the K&N in, the truck just goes up the hill with very little question and you can tell that it is breathing much better. Not as much throttle is required and you don't get the sense that the engine wil have to downshift 3/4 up the hill like I do with the stock filter.
How much more power? Honestly don't know. There is enough to notice in a subtle way . . . don't expect too much. It's more a feeling like your engine is just working that much less to give you the same or a little more.
I think it's worth it . . . and I haven't noticed ANY dust or dirt behind it as well.
