429 f150
hey guys I just got a 70s 429 thunder jet I was considering putting it in my 92 f150 4x4 with 5speed. Would i be able to use my tray and such? Would this be a good engine alternative? my 5.0 is all but dead. Thoughts?
One thing you will have to check on is smog control. As you are going into a 90's truck, you may have to make sure that the 429 will be brought up to the 92 level of emissions. Also, I doubt that the 5 speed will be able to handle the HP and torque of the 429. Same for the transfer case.
Just did some searching around. As an example, it is illegal to swap an older engine into a newer vehicle in Colorado. You will have to check the laws in your state. In other states I saw examples of the engine has to pass the emissions of the vehicle year. Others state no none fuel injected engines can be used if the original was fuel injected.
As a start you might try this google (swapping older engine into newer vehicle "emissions laws"), without the parentheses.

It all depends, like I found, some states make it illegal to put in an older engine, period. Does not matter whether fuel injected or not. It all depends upon which state he lives in and what the laws are. If his state does allow it, he may not be able to license it in another state if he moves.

Edit - Did some more searching and found this. It is not gospel, but the person states he contacted Utah Govt about the emissions. Per them, the same or newer rule on engine swaps is federal.

In order for an engine swap to meet Federal Regulations (EPA), the engine must be the same year or newer as the vehicle, AND the engine must have been a factory option for that year vehicle.

Especially if they decide to sell it and find out they can't. Or move and find they can't license it.
Like I said, I would go with a good rebuilt 302 or 251 of the same year. Then all you have to do is swap it. No trying to figure out changes in trannie, transfer case, computer, etc.

You might check with Ford, probably not that cheap and maybe not available that old, but I believe they are warrantying them 2 years unlimited mileage.
Try googling (remanufactured Ford 5.0 f150).
Found this right away.

Also there may be a good local shop that could rebuild your engine.
