HI,
My fuel gauge on my 2002 F150 XLT is working intermittently. Usually after I fill up when it goes to empty it usually takes a couple starts and retarts and the fuel gauge will begin to measure correctly.

What is the problem and what steps can I take to correct?

Any help is appreciated.

Are you leaving the ignition key on when filling? If so, this is normal.

 

glc- Do you suggest taking the key completely out of the ignition to fill up? I normally leave the key in the ignition but in the off position.

 

Mine has done the same thing since I bought it new off of the dealer lot in 1999. Fill it up and it will read full, then all of the sudden it goes to empty. After a few miles it starts reading correctly again all the way to empty. And yes, I always take the key out of the ignition.

Leaving the key in but in the off position shouldn't cause a problem.

I think I will leave as is since it ultimately shows the fuel level after a few shut downs. Once it doesn't go to full I will try something new.
