Oil Change Problem
Oil Change Problem
I've always taken my 08' F150 to a Ford dealership to have the oil changed but for the last 3 times I have taken it to Jiffy Lube because I was short on time and couldn't wait for an appointment.
So I took it there last week and after I left I noticed that the engine had a ticking sound to it, it got worse and took it to a local mechanic to have it checked out. That mechanic said that it sounded like a lifter problem and it shouldn't hurt anything. I said ok and I'll have it checked again if it got even worse. He also said that the oil filter that Jiffy Lube used was the wrong filter for my truck, it was MUCH smaller than what he uses and Ford uses. (See attached picture) I went back to Jiffy lube that night and they said that it was the correct filter.
Well, today I went to a Ford dealership to have the oil changed again because I felt that the small filter was doing damage. They told me the same thing, that Jiffy Lube used the wrong filter. The ticking noise is also still there.
What do you guys think, would the wrong filter cause the ticking noise, is this hurting my engine? Do I have a case against Jiffy Lube?

I would think the other question is the weight of the oil that jiffy used compared to dealership????
To me the filter cant cause ticking,,, and the only way it could is if it got completely blocked. Which if that happened there is something else wrong.
But that is my opinion!!!!!! I am sure someone else will say something different.
Like was it a Fram filter???? Oh there is no picture that I see.

Modular engines are real picky about oil and filters. Poor anti drain backs can cause dry starts and especially on the 3v engine it can leed to huge repair bills. Jiffy Lube may have used the "correct" filter but it was poorly designed CHEAP.. Motorcraft parts including filters are the safe bet. Hopefully if you have the 3v you havent damaged the cam phaser crap. I change my oil myself takes about a half hour taking my time and I get all the stuff at walmart. Hopefully it will go away..
If you have a the 5.4 (3V), the same exact thing happened to my truck pretty much, and for the same reason. If they used 5w-20 oil, which is absolutely the only thing they should have used unless you requested otherwise, the only culprit is a cheap filter. Motorcraft FL820S and high end Puralator filters are the only things that should be used on these engines because of the anti-drain-back valves. They're just picky and sensitive motors when it comes to filters.
Wix is another that's good. Motorcraft filters have been or are made by multiple companies over the years, including Wix and Puralator. Puralator may even own Wix? Somebody bigger owns em . . .

There are parts on the motor called cam phasers that just begin to "tick" after a while. Most 3V 5.4s get the problem over time, using proper oil and filter just delays it as far as I'm concerned. The couple rounds of cheap filters just pushed them over the edge to make them tick loudly. Because your truck just now started doing it, take it to Ford immediately and get the cheap filter off and it might have a chance of being reduced or going away. But I consider the issue "a matter of time" type of deal. If that's what is ticking on your motor, there isn't anything you can really do besides replacing the parts. The phasers tick by design (literally, they're supposed to), they're just louder now. Google and search this site for the dozens of threads by the name of "5.4 tick", "cam phasers . . . ", etc. You can replace the phaser, guides, timing chains, etc., but many times the noise returns soon after. Some trucks never get the ticking, others get it after 40k miles of Ford only oil changes.
I wouldn't do anything, just get used to the noise. Mine does it and it runs perfectly fine, as do millions of other 3V 5.4s. Mine got it right around 80k miles, has 88k now and I haven't noticed a thing. Tons of people have gotten it even earlier than me and run the motors over the 150k mark without issue. But you'll have to decided for yourself whether fixing a noise, that isn't really a problem in my opinion, is worth the $1,000+ dollars in parts and labor to you. Don't mistake me, sometimes they DO need to be replaced, but majority of cases don't require it. We also don't know for sure that the cam phasers are the issue, as it does indeed sound very similar to injectors opening and closing, but this is obviously much quieter. It annoys the hell out of me, but it's nowhere near $1k+ annoying.
Much of this is my (somewhat) personal conclusion of the situation based on my own reading for hours on end and getting an idea and view on the problem, so some will counter what I have said and tell you that you need to replace the phasers, etc.
How many miles do you have on the truck?

valvoline has reduced size filters....
the valvoline V0-105 is the same base as the Ford FL820s and is listed for the f150 ...the outer diameter is less than the motorcraft...but as far as the antisiphon and other components its probably subpar to the motorcraft....
there are other labels on this filter also that are sold under a few different names...
a lot of quick lube places use these due to better pricing/profits

Thanks for the reply KMAC. The engine has around 30,000 miles on it, the truck has 100,000. The engine is a replacement from Ford.
On a unrelated issue, or maybe it is related. Last night I was at a light and my check engine light came on and the truck was running really rough and shaking at idle, also shook when I was driving. Pulled into autozone, had them check the code and P0357 came up. The truck stopped idling and driving rough late last night, had no problems today but the light is still on. Know what this could be now?

No problem! That's really low mileage though.
I think that's a misfire/bad COP code.
