pining under light acceleration
I'm bringing this topic up again but I couldn't reply to the original posting. I'm sure if you did a search on "pinging" you'll find the original post. As some background, I have a 99 F-150 w/ 4.6L Romeo engine and have been experiencing an octane ping only at light acceleration on hot (above 95 degrees) days, but not when cold. I've had the truck into the dealer two other times. The second time the replaced the MAF sensor, but it didn't change the problem.
Once again I took my truck back to the Ford dealer because of the persistant pinging. They did an OBD II test and said they were able to reproduce the pinging sound, but everything is performing normally. Bottom line, they ain't going to do nothing about it. The service manager said he could reprogram the computer, but the engine would run very rough. Again he reminded me that a bit of pinging is normal, but I'm having a hard time believing that the engine should always ping under light acceleration, not under load. Seems to me that some sensor or serveral sensors are probably contributing to the problem (see the point I made below about it only making the pinging noise when it is hot, above 95 degrees but not when it's cool). I get no check engine light and I'm now running 89 octane exclusively.
Should I contact the Ford Zone Rep? I'm sick of hearing that this is normal. Will the flip chip cure this problem?
On a seperate, but similar note. My truck has also developed a valve train rattle at startup. It's not a knocking noise, it's more of a chattering noise. I brought this up to the dealer as well. And again they said this is normal. A friend of mine mentioned to me that if the valve lashing adjusters are not in spec, the lifters will bleed off the oil pressure and make this noise at startup. However, this dealership believes this problem is normal.
Suggestions?

I don't care what any dealer says... If it pings frequently then it is NOT normal. I'd seek a second opinion, even a third if needed.
Resetting the computer isn't such a bad idea, just disconnect the battery and turn the headlights on for about 10 minutes. Since the dealer didn't find any codes you don't have to worry about erasing any potentially helpful fault codes.
I'd also suggest that you try a search here too, it should be working now after Steve re-indexed it over the weekend.
