Thumbs up 4.2L's

I don't know about everyone else, but I have the 4.2 with a 5-speed behind it and everything else stock and I blow people's doors off all the time! I am still looking for MORE POWER though. Any suggestions?

after reading some posts here from others with the 4.2 i decided to try it. my 4x4 v6 5spd. is able to stay right next to my girlfriends 350 chevy 2wd auto. can't beat her but i aint losin also i've tried a camaro with a 305...dusted him (old version) and finally a dodge ram 4x4 with the 318. dusted him too.
all in all i'm very impressed with this little motor. long hills are my only disappointment. otherwise it's great.

i have to drive through an extremely hilly section of highway 33 when i head to Tulsa. the trick w/ the hills is to hit them as fast you can. Actually, I find that turning the overdrive off or keeping the rpm's near 3000 does the trick to maintain your speed.
my only complaint with the 4.2L is that it feels like it takes forever to get out of 1st gear if i accelerate hard (But this is probably due to driver error). Do miss being able to peel out though....but i guess i'll just abuse mudder's truck for that purpose.

Thumbs up

jamford: Yes, the 4.2L with the 5-sp is not at all slow. You say you want more? Do a K&N with the airbox mod, performance muffler (I like Flowmaster), and a Superchip.

Everytime she drives my truck she does it, but oh well, it makes her happy to hear my tires squeal and to leave rubber. Pony, you just don't have to do it from EVERY take off

Hey Jamford: You might think about lower rear gears. I know several older six's in Ford's and any truck for that matter, with 4:10's and that is a big increase, I would say that you will get more bank for your buck with lower gears

yeah pony you're right about the hills. hit em hard or shift to 4th. i usually end shifting because of all the slow traffic in front of me on the only hill that seems to make this happen.

Cool

Looking at the postings, I gather the good standard mods for the 4.2L include exhaust, K&N along with a Superchip...I am especially intrigued by this option...any feedback from someone who has this chip?...install?...reliability?...for only $300(?), it seems like a great option...any help would be appreicated..thanks!

Big Bunnell, check out my post on "Other Drivetrain." I had coolant leaking form my block. A couple of other people responded that had the same problem.

i've posted before that my 4.2 5-spd runs well. all ya gotta do is row them gears. downshift on hills, downshift 2 gears to pass, zoom baby. i somewhat over-loaded it with gravel & it had no problems there, either, & it's not modified. and i got to keep $1000, since i ordered this truck. i can easily believe that it would be faster than a 4.6 auto.
