2005 5.4 running rough and making noise
Hello everyone - I have a 2005 Expedition EB 4X4 with 81,000 miles on it. I've only owned it for a year, but in that time everything has been great.
Last week I noticed that when I started it, it would make a clacking, diesel-like sound for 2-3 seconds and then sound and run like normal.
Two days ago, I was returning from a 4 hr. trip and noticed that the truck felt like it had a misfire while doing 70 in cruise control.
Yesterday the Engine light came on during a short trip (still running rough), and I checked the codes. They are:
P0022 - Camshaft position actuator A - Bank 2 timing over-retarded
P0340 - Camshaft position sensor A - Bank 1 circuit malfunction
P0345 - Camshaft position sensor A - Bank 2 circuit malfunction
Today I drove it to a couple of stores looking for Cam position sensors, and noticed that it was making a very loud diesel-like noise when I slowed down, and when I took corners. I was only able to find one sensor, but I haven't installed it because I think I have bigger problems.
In my research today, it looks like I might be looking at problems with my cam phasers or timing chain guides. Does this sound right? Is there anything else I should consider? I won't dig into the engine myself, and would like to have a good idea of repairs and $$ before I take it somewhere. Thanks!

yep cam phasers timing chain guides....other parts associated with the timing.
might want to make sure that the oil pump is good too and that the oil pickup in the pan is clean...the guides tend to put filings from the guides on the pickup screen, thereby reducing the oil pump capability. so that means making sure oil is getting everywhere it need to.
next is to make sure that you don't have a bad injector...05's have a extended warranty of sorts on the injectors...there are qualifiers for that.
Thank you for the replies guys!
I'm embarrassed to post my findings, but it has to be done. I went out to my truck yesterday morning and thought I'd better check my oil before I drive it any more. The oil didn't even appear on the dipstick. After 2 trips with my wife's car to the gas station purchasing 3 quarts each time, I had to add 5 full quarts to get it to the full mark!
It has only been about 3500 miles since I last had it changed at the Ford dealership. There are absolutely no oil spots on my driveway, and my truck doesn't smoke at all. The only thing I can figure is that the dealer only added 2 quarts at my last change. Funny thing is that I never got a warning light, and my gauge stays at about 60% from the low to the high marks.
After I filled it with oil, I cleared the codes and took it for a 20 minute ride. It ran smooth and quiet. I then took it to the dealership to get an oil change so I'd have clean oil and a new filter. Of course I checked the oil myself before I got on the road afterwards.
Everything seems fine, except that when I start it, it sounds like the starter is staying engaged for an extra second or two. I hope that's the case, and not a noise coming from the engine. It appears that I lucked out, and I'm hoping that there wasn't any damage done by running it while so low on oil. I always baby her, but will be extra gentle with her now.
Again, thank you for the great replies!

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I had this exact same problem last week. Started making bad noises, took it to the dealership where they said it was the cam phasers.
When they got to looking at it, they said it was down to two quarts of oil?! I change my oil regularly and it just now came due for a change. Oil pressure never dipped, no oil spots anywhere, no smoke, no smells, no nothing.
So they put oil into it but told me it's still making a knocking noise from the bottom of the engine, which they think is the main bearing gone bad. So that means a new motor at around $6000.
I just can't believe that five quarts of oil ran out with no sign of anything, no visible leaks, and that now it's an unfixable problem..... any ideas, suggestions, help!? Please!

Just wanted to give an update in case anyone runs into the same issue….
I talked to the mechanic about the knocking sound he's hearing from the bottom of the motor. He said in his experience, it's probably the main bearing gone bad, but he's not certain. We're going to drop the oil pan to look for zinc shavings or sludge…. I'm hoping it'll just be sludge and I can run some Auto-Rx through it and try to save it.
I'll update once I hear the results.
