5.4 3valve VVT question

one of my buddies who buys/sells alot of trucks due to his line of work was telling me that all 5.4 3v vvt ford engines have some type of major failure with the vvt or something and that it always happens around 80k-120k. i wish i could give more info but thats all i have right now, is there any truth to this or does it come down to the owner of the truck not taking proper care of maintenance?

It does not ALWAYS happen, but it's not uncommon.

Using the recommended Motorcraft oil and filter and changing it every 3k helps a lot.
