Eletric fan conversion?

I have for a 2005 f150 lariat. Thinking about doing the eletric fan conversion I have heard about. Question 1 is there a place that sells a complete conversion kit so I don't have to do and fab work? Question 2 will I see any increase in my mpg? Question 3 is it a simple swap I can do at home or is it something I need to pay a mechanic to do. Question 4 and what are some of the pros and cons of the conversion? Thanks for any help that y'all can give me.

1) Several places have kits. Troyer and Mad to name two.

2) Maybe 1-2 miles per gallon if you are lucky.

3) The wiring was the hardest part for me. I hate wiring.

4) Pros: slightly increased mpg, removes parasitic drag of mechanical fan, motor has more pep, more room in the engine bay.

Cons: finding a fan controller that is reliable, the cost of the conversion.

There are many threads here on electric fans you should take some time to read them before you make any decisions. It will aid you in finding some tried and true set ups that work.

http://www.madenterprise.com/All_F150.asp $ 363.50

If you can wire 12volt and handle a little modifying of your factory fan shroud you can do it easily.

I had the Madenterprise unit on my 07 5.4 for 2 1/2 years before I traded it. It ran flawless, very tough controller and excellent customer service from Mike.

Flex A Lite Monster 270 is by far the most superior E-Fan kit. It drops straight on. (Not Zip tied) The wiring is child's play. Just don't mount the controller on the shroud.

I bought one second hand with controller for $250 shipped.

The only other kit IDE consider would be an 09 - present OEM kit.

Be carful if you have an electric fan clutch as disconnecting this will throw a CEL apparently.

I like my Troyer fans but the controllers not so much. When the fans go (if they go) I would get either a Flex A Lite Monster 270 or the new OEM electric fans as well. When I did mine the OEM fans were not an option but I did look hard at the Flex A Lite. The cost at the time scared me off but after melting the Troyer controllers I easily have more into mine than the Flex A Lite would have cost. Lesson Learned!

So the flex a lite would be a better choice?

Supposedly the curve blades are quieter but, in the aftermarket world 99% of the e-fans are junk in terms of design & quality IMHO. The OEM units flow anywhere from 50% to 200% more CFM than the "Hi Perf" aftermarket units, last for years in real world daily, all weather use and are quiet- and are less expensive in most cases!

I bought (last summer) a replacement assembly for my wife's 1997 Cougar Sport (V8) (the bearings in the e-motor were starting to whine).....the entire assembly including the shroud was $120 with tax (I bought the entire assembly because the motor itself was $80).

You will also hear/read about people having issues/concerns with their engines running warm/hot, once it is really verified and there are no mechanical issues, 99% it can be traced right to these HP Aftermarket fans.....those using oem units- I have never in 20 years heard of an issue related to them in any way in regards to cooling.

So ford makes a kit to go from the mechanical fan to an electric fan system? How much does it cost? And where can I look for it at?

I picked up a efan out of a 2010 model. And looked hard at controllers and found that Dakota Digital has a pretty sweet setup with theirs. Hooks to the OBDII port for speed and temp. So no running extra wires to a temp probe. Everything does mount inside the cab so the heat wont ruin it. I'll have to let you know how it lasts, since I just installed it, and Don't put that many miles on it anymore.

Ford does not make a "kit". You would need to buy the efans from Ford (or find a set in the wreckers) from a 2009 F150 or newer. Then you would need to do some triming on them to get them to fit. You would still need to get an aftermarket fan controller to run them. The PCM would handle that job on the newer trucks.

FAL controller

Hey Grizzstang, I have troyer fans also and a couple of years ago got rid of the troyer controllers and bought a FAL controller. I wired it so both fans go on at the same time. FAL controllers have a soft start and only run 60% at start up and increase to 100% if the temp increases 10 degrees over your initial setting. Mine have never gone over 60% and I live in Az. Having both fans run at same time cools the whole radiator, not just half of it. I love it. I also figured out a way to keep the fans from running at highway speeds with a/c on. If you want to know how I did it, let me know. It's cheap and easy to do.
