2005 5.4 v8 stalling, engine in safe mode, engine light on

It started with just stalling when I came to a stop. I cleaned the MAF and throtle body. Ran well for a couple days then it started again. Followed by the warning light "Engine running in safe mode." I turned the engine off and let it sit for a couple hours. When I drove it again, it didn't stall out, but the check engine light is on. I have read through many posts and there are several suggestions from the Idle Air Control Valve to the Coils. Just looking for what to try next. I don't have a code reader yet. Suggestions?

Most parts stores have a code reader and will do it free. What did you use to clean the MAF?

Go back to O'Reilly and get them to read your truck for codes.

I have a 2006 5.4l and have been batteling this problem for a week or more after numerous trips to ford mechs and replacing TB, MAF. looks like the solution to my problem was wiring harness had whole in it with wire grounding out next to A?C dryer. the code reader was P061B. hope this helps

Finally got my code reader in the mail. Spit out the codes: P2104 - Throttle actuator control system - Forced Idle, and P2111 - Throttle actuator control system - stuck open. From what I have read, it is either the throttle position sensor ($80) or the entire throttle botty ($280) which included the TPS....debating on which to try. If I get the TPS and it doesn't fix the problem, I can't take it back.

You get the TPS code when the trottle body is dirty or bad. It's a gamble which ever way you go.

Did you use a brush to clean the hinges on the TB?
