Question 4.6 that pings

I have a 4.6 that pings no matter what kind of gas I use. Does anyone else have this problem and did you do anything about it? I just found out that I have the common door crack problem and the paint cracking in the rain channels. I am starting to get nervous here. I have had no problem yet except I burnt out a set of o2 sensors already which were replaced by ford. if you have any input let me know.

Reset the computer. If that doesn't work have the dealer reflash it and check for any codes.

My 4.6 pings too. It seems to ping when I slowly accelerate, especially between second and third gear. The pings only last 1,2 or 3 pings and thats it. The engine never pings if I'm stepping on it.
I always chalked up the pinging to the computer adjusting the motors parameters?

Ladies and Gentlemen
Almost all new trucks ping. Chevys ping Dodges ping and our Fords ping. I was told by an engineer at Ford that "light pinging" is normal. Although he did later admit that this is the result of pushing the limits in order to meet emissions standards.
I still think that NO vehicle should ping as did the shop foreman at my dealership, but Ford says otherwise. I had a 98 4.2 that pinged almost all the time , sometimes even on 92 octane under load. Ford eventually bought that truck back from me. If you're gonna press the issue with Ford, be prepared to fight till you're blue in the face, but DO NOT give in!

I remember reading something here about stopping pinging on this sight. It mentioned something about changing the octane bar to advance, yes advance, the timing to stop the pinging. Sorry, thats all I remember.

You should check out the CORRAL.NET Modular BBS. They should be able to help you out.

try chevron techron concentrate. it drastically reduced pinging for me in the 4.6 crown vic I drive at work. available at walmart, auto stores etc, but don't dilute it too much (different ratio for different sized bottles)

They tell me it shares about 50% parts with F150, so I still plan on hanging around at least 50% of the time. Other sites don't compare.

have you tried octane boost to see if that helps? fuel injector/valve cleaner? how many miles? my dad has a 99 f150 like mine and his dealer told him to run valve cleaner every 5000 miles.

Mine does it too. See the responses I got under "Do I need Premium?" I'm gonna try the Techron stuff. Might be carbon or other build up.

I have PINGing in my 97-4.6 and the Ford dealers have said it was "ok" or they did not hear anything! First off, I broke-in this truck like a baby. There is no way any one could treat it better, but when time came to Drive (rev)@ 2500mi then I heard the noise. With 87oct it will ping in 2nd above 4300 and in 3rd above 3800+.... With 93oct only with the AC on and full throttle in 3rd above 4400+... But I just used the 93oct for the past 2 years, but now it is getting worse.
Pulling my boat just down the hwy at 60mph in 5th, it sounds like ping-pong ***** going down the tailpipe! I love Fords, but this truck is the most expansive thing I own. So, I need to know how to get ford to replace the motor?

I have a 98 with the 4.6L and 15,xxx. Brand new, it would give only one or two light pings while the engine was wound up above 4,000 RPM. This decayed to almost constant pinging at the same RPM with about 14,xxx miles.

To make a long story short, get some of that Chevron Fuel Injector cleaner with techron. It works, the truck is back to where the it was when new (little if any pinging above 4,000 RPM). I had about 3/4 tank of fuel, so I put in two bottles so it would not be too diluted (one bottle treats up to 12 gallons of fuel).

Another sugguestion, start using Texaco gasoline. I did not believe all the talk about it, but tried it anyway. The thing I started noticing, was better idle. Not nearly the misfires at idle, for what reason I do not know. I am now a Texaco believer.
