302 rear main seal

Well i'm doing a 5speed swap on my 86 and while i have everything out i want to replace my rear main seal because it seams to be leaking. I got the old one off but the new one seams like its just a hair to big because i can't get it in. But after checking it seams to be that i got the right one. Is there a trick to this that i'm missing. Ive been trying to search it up but can't find much to help me. Its a one piece and everyone seems to say it should just pop in without dropping the pan and loosening the cap. Any advice will help
