vct solenoid removal question

I have a 2007 5.4. I have searched and searched a lot of different forums concerning the removal/replacement of the vct solenoids. It seems that the 07+ engines supposedly need to have the valve covers removed but some have made claims that this not the case. Does anyone know for certain as to whether or not the vct solenoids can be replaced without removing the valve covers on the 07+ motors?

I too have an 07 and was trying to remove them. It seems that you can't get the VCT 'seal' out without destroying it, and then I read that you can't remove the soleniod on these valve covers anyways. I guess Ford changed the design in 2007 making it more difficult to get at the solenoids......????

I bought new seals so I don't have to be careful with the originals. Looks like the 07+ seals just don't have the lip for easy removal like earlier models. Only difference I see.

I do believe that the 07 + MY that the covers do have to be removed to replace the solenoids.

I haven't done anything further. I went by my local napa trying to find new seals so I could attempt to remove the solenoids. They couldn't find the seals, and I have only been able to find the seals with the 'lip' online. The seals around my VCT solenoids are different from the ones I have seen on the pre '07 models. I definetly cannot get them out without destroying the seal.

After reading thru some alldata info, it seems that the only difference is that the earlier seals were designed to be reused if one were ginger enough while removing them. And alldata says to remove the valve cover on any MY truck, not just 07+. That being said, I agree that the later year seals are going to be destroyed. Doesn't matter to me cuz I planned to replace them anyway. I have read on a few mustang forums where people changed the seals without taking off the valve cover. The only problem that might exist is whether or not the little notch on the seal seat is there like on the earlier models. Either way I am going to attempt to replace the solenoids. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

What do you mean ALLData info ? Or ALLData says lol. I think your referring to Ford company TSB's, - it should say. I mean that's all they have, TSB's and Service/labor times, - from Ford. I liked the labor times.

Did you ever attempt this job? I haven't wanted to remove my valve covers, to check out the solenoids.
