Ill bet 99.9% of the answers will be the 5.4liter. I would get the 5.4 if I could do it all over.

In that case, I would get the Triton V10!

I have been fortunate enough to have done it again. I ordered a 1997 before the 5.4 was available. It was a fine ride even with a 4.6. Then, I bought a 99 Lariat,SC, 5.4, 3.55LS, everything available on a Lariat, cd, 4wheel anti-lock, leather......
After owning both engines, the 5.4 is a winner hands down in every catagory. Torque, top end, horsepower, fuel mileage, towing comfort, etc...... The 5.4 is well worth every cent over the 4.6 even with the slapping problem. I still feel fortunate as I await my new 2000 model 5.4 replacement engine for my truck. D

Since I do not want an auto tranny, I would still get the 4.6L. With my exhaust, K&N and SuperChip, I must be close to the 5.4 output. Having said that, if Ford would offer the 5.4L with a manual tranny, I would opt for the larger engine. I noticed that none of the big 3 offer a 1/2 ton pickup with the larger engine and a stick. Does anyone know why this is?

Cool

I think it is because the Automatic has a better chance at getting higher fuel economy than a stick - it takes away all the variables (except the weight of the foot )
Our government will be forcing the manufacturers to produce trucks with higher mileage in the near future. I believe the auto tranny is the first step. IMHO

Almost forgot the original topic of this thread...
If I had it to do over, I might get the PSD. I really like my V-10 - so I have to say MAYBE to the PSD.

I love my 5.4L!! I have only limited use of a 4.6L during my test drives, but I am very pleased with my 5.4L. I would definately get it again. Only I won't because Ford does not offer the Lariat in reg cab anymore.

D,
Actually, the 4.6 gets better mileage than the 5.4l.

That is really stupid that ford doesn't allow a 5.4L/5-speed option. A lot of people would be interested in that. Ford didn't have a 5.8L/5-speed option in the Old F-150's either. I wonder why, it wouldn't cost them much...

We'll given the mods I am about at the HP of a 5.4 with my 4.6L. MPG was at 18 prior to the new Cat-Back, so if I get 19 now I can't say I would beat that with a 5.4.

I have driven a 4.6 twice - nice small V8. My 5.4 has great torque and power, but my next truck will have a PSD. It's just too bad that I'll have to step up to a Super Duty to get it.

Wouldn't it be great to get a PSD in an F150 or even F250LD?

fast46triton,
I don't mean to speak for D here but I did the same as him. I also bought a '97 with 4.6 before the 5.4 was out and then traded for a '99 with 5.4. My '97s got between 13 and 14.5 my '99 gets between 14 and 16.2. The trucks were both 4x4 supercab short box. The mileage of the 99 5.4 is better than the 97 4.6 (YMMV)<G>

I am one of the odd ones that likes a stick. Because of this both my F-150s had to be ordered with the 4.6L. Ford doesn't give a crap about stick users so they didn't spend any money to put the SD 5 speed in the 150s.
I lease my trucks but if I bought them I would get the 5.4 and incert a manual tranny.

I really like the power that the 4.6L has in my current 1998 f-150. Has more power than the 318 dodge engine I had in my old dodge truck. I'm satisfied with mine!

I know I'm going to hell for this but I would have to say I would get either engine but an automatic tranny. I love sticks and would drive them over an auto any day but I've heard the 4.6 manual tranny can't handle to much power so that means my speed is limited, which sucks.
