Question Piston Slappers

Hello Everyone,

I am fairly new here so be gentle. I have read with much interest all the posts regarding piston slap. I do not think that I am presently hearing any of this noise. My truck is a 98 with 11K miles on it. It is a 5.4. Here is my question .. I have read in posts that ALL 5.4's are made in Winsor .. is that correct ... and where is Winsor ... hope I spelled that right .. Has anyone come right out and said ... all engines made from this date to this date have this problem? That would be nice ... my engine date is 10-10-97.
My truck has a slight noise when I start it ... almost like my ol 65 Mustang when I started it after it sit for a while .. while the oil was on it's way up to the lifters .. hehe .. you know what I mean ... I am sorry to babble .. anyway, some solid facts would be nice if you could humor this newbie a little.

Thanks
Russ

The motors are made in Windsor, Ontario Canada. I am not sure about all 5.4 slappin.
I have a 99 w/22k and no noise yet and i hope i never get it. My engine build date i2 10-24-98.

Good luck, Akula

Typical symptoms:

When the engine is cold knock/tapping will last for 10-30 seconds and then go away.

All 5.4l engines from 97-Spring of 99 CAN have slap, BUT nly a small percentage do (less than 1%? unconfirmed)

It is usually quite noticable, although this varies from vehicle to vehicle.

If you hear a knock, it is likely piston slap. Ford is replacing these now, see your dealer for details. If he gives you hassle, print these threads.

Thumbs up

You made a perfect comparison. The sound is exactly like a valve tapping on cold starts. The question criteria Ford uses to identify a slapper is: Is the sound only evident on cold starts, meaning a cold engine, not outside temp.? Does the sound only happen from 1100-1400 rpm? Does the sound quit after putting the vehicle in gear?
The sound varies from a loud and noticable knock to a tapping sound, depending on the severity of the slap. Sorry to ramble on, my real question is, does anyone know the modifications required to put a 2000 year model engine into a 1999 truck??? My new 2000 engine will be here by the 10th of Nov. The dealer is going to install it in my 99?????

Don't bet on your engine being a "new 2000." Ford is putting what they call a Ford Quality Replacement (FQR) in these trucks. There has been some discussion about exactly what an FQR is but I think we have agreed that it includes everything but the intake, coil packs and fuel rail. Other than that no one has been able to say conclusively what part of these engines are new and what part are rebuilt. If you get any specific info from your dealer be sure to pass it along.

kkirt1,

Actually, the information I got from my dealer about my 99 was that if you had a 1999 with slap, you would get a new engine right off of the production line (which I suppose would now be a 2000). 98 and 97 model years would get "FQR" rebuilt engines. D might be getting a new engine off the line. I think everyone should get a new engine. But I guess Ford's thinking they're not going to let you get the upgraded 99 and later 260 hp...even if it was their defect to begin with. An "FQR" (I'm assuming) would give you a repaired engine, but the 235 horsepower of a 97,98 5.4l engine. You should get the extra hp for your trouble in my opinion.

My service advisor told me that there are no cores available for re-build(V10's) so I would be getting a NEW V10. I asked if that ment a 2000 with 310 hp and he said no, it would be built to 1999 specs. Another thing I've noticed is that just as the knocking sound fades away, the engine seems to smooth out and sounds different. Kind of like it was running on 9 cylinders and the 10th just came on.
