Post 5.4 liter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was reading on the net and I found in more than one place that the Ford 5.4 liter V-8 can only tow 7700 lbs. This can't be accurate can it? If it is then I guess I'll keep my Dodge Dakota around a little longer. I'm told it will tow 9000 lbs.
Thanks for your responses.

I am willing to bet the GCVWR for the Dakota is 9000 lbs. if the truck weighs around, say, 3500lbs. for example and the passengers and cargo weigh 500lbs. the the truck is "rated" to tow 5000lbs. Not that it would be safe to pull that with a small truck.

I doubt ANY Dakota can tow 9000 lbs.
5000lbs. is a stretch.

Interesting tidbit:

The 1998 and 1999 Dodge Dakota R/T with 5.9 liter V8 were rated to tow 6200 lbs. Chrysler has now revised that rating to 2000 pounds! How p*ssed-off would you be if you were one of those owners?

9000lbs? Not hardly! That Dakota has a pee-***** frame compared to the F-series! Its suspension and frame couldnt hold up to it.

Believe it or not, but my dad saw a Dakota pulling a 5th wheel trailer a few months ago. I don't imagine that there was much in that trailer though!

Thanks for your replies. 9000lbs is just what I've read. It's in my manual and it's on the net at truckworld.com. I'll never pull anything heavier than a ton, if anything at all. I was just curious about what the 5.4 liter would do.
Thanks for the info.

Many manufactures are making super-light 5th wheel trailers just for the light truck owners.
Just be careful and match the trailer to the truck's towing capacity. Any truck will pull more than it can safely tow.
The trick is stopping the load! When I'm coming downhill with over 6 tons behind me, I want to feel comfortable in knowing my truck was built to handle the load.
Good luck - and Safe Towing

Just pulled this off:

http://www.4adodge.com/dakota/frames...odels&club_cab

Dakota regular cab 4x2 models with the standard engine pull
up to 2,250 pounds. With the optional new Next Generation
4.7-liter Magnum V8®, regular cab 4x2 models can tow up to
6,700 pounds when properly equipped. The Club Cab 4x4
tows up to 6,200 pounds when properly equipped. The Quad
Cab 4x2, with the optional 5.9L Magnum® V8, will have the
power to tow up to 6,350 pounds when properly equipped.

6,700 looks tops to me, but then again I'm in MIS and you can't believe a thing they say.

J-C: I saw a 1997 or 1998 F-150 Reg Cab pulling at least a 25' Fifth-wheel camper down the interstate this past weekend. I thought it must of had something pushing it....Or the trailer was VERY light!

Remember it's not just the engine that determines towing capacity.
Otherwise you could tow 10,000 lbs or more with a Lightning.
The whole braking/tranny/frame combo is VERY important also.
